Air Canada Boeing 767 to make emergency landing at Madrid airport after ‘technical issue’

An Air Canada Boeing 767 aircraft was returning to Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport for an emergency landing on Monday after reporting a “technical issue,” Spanish airport operator AENA said.

Spanish pilots union SEPLA said on Twitter, without citing any sources, that part of the plane’s landing gear had fallen off and gone into one of the engines.

The incident occurred just hours after a drone sighting near the takeoff area caused a brief disruption at the airport, with 26 flights diverted away from Barajas.

The Canadian airliner called air traffic control 30 minutes after takeoff and requested a slot for an emergency landing, an AENA spokeswoman said.

She was unable to provide further details or say whether the incident was in any way related to the previous shutdown.

An Air Canada flight is returning to Madrid airport after part of the landing gear "fell off" and got into the engine, according to a Spanish pilots union.

Flight AC837 is currently circling over the south east of Spain, in an effort to burn fuel before landing.

The airport operator said the pilot called air traffic control 30 minutes after take off to request an emergency landing.

A tire also reportedly ruptured on take-off, one of 10 on this model of aircraft."The aircraft opted to return to Madrid and is currently circling to use up fuel and lighten the aircraft for landing."The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, is designed to operate on one engine and our pilots are fully trained for this eventuality. Nonetheless, an emergency was declared in order to obtain landing priority.

Landing gear fell into the engine...sounds plausible

Nose Landing gear maybe but the Mains are BEHIND the engines so unlikely.

It looked like everything was there on the nose gear from the crappy videos.

One wonders if maybe it struck something on the runway that caused the issue.

From the photo, it appears it was a mainwheel. Which is indeed strange?

If the shraphnel from the tread or the tire carcas, (it looks 'blown' in the above image), was thrown forward during the takeoff roll, it could be ingested by the engine something like the tire disintegration on Concorde at CDG where shrapnel was ingested by both #1 & #2 engines.

The #1 engine appears to have damage and lost power but was operating for the approach/landing.

Yeah just saw the photos.  Very strange physics at work.  Although a Burt tire is a pretty powerful explosion.  
a whole lot of hype over it.

Hi boestar...not sure what you mean by strange physics. I was thinking of the rotational speed of the wheel at say, Vr, (~160kts?) and the speed of any chunks of retread that were flung away from the carcass out in front of the engine during takeoff and ingested.

Interesting photos. Has it been confirmed the tire blew first? Could there have been FOD on the runway similar to the AF Concorde? There was a drone sighting issue prior to this departure. What if the left engine ingested it and the #5 MLG was cut on it’s sidewall. No damage to the #1 MLG. 

Something is odd about the sequence of events but I’m glad it all ended well for passengers and crew.

Hard to tell for sure but for my money that looks like the tire cap separated and got thrown forward and into the engine. We had a rash of those a few years back and the amount of damage that can do is staggering.

Yes its not hard to imagine how a big chunk of flying tire rubber could certainly do some serious engine damage. Also the tire letting go and the engine failure /stall would have been a nearly simultaneous event. It will be interesting to hear more details of this incident.

A passenger seated just aft of the wing left side tweeted this:

 

#AC837 so just at take off there was a huge bang under my seat and then I saw smoke and flames from the left engine. This pic is from a quick video I took and one frame shows the fire for a split second.
