Always wondered how they get the staffing right for AMEs, especially for line maintenance.  At least for pilots you gotta fill the seats.

Pilots at WestJet’s western regional subsidiary Encore have rejected a tentative agreement reached with the airline last month.

According to a press release from the Air Line Pilots Association, 53 per cent of pilots who voted rejected the agreement.

“Despite contract improvements to compensation and scheduling, our pilots held strong in their belief that management isn’t doing enough to address the ongoing pilot attraction and retention issues and low morale that remain at our airline,” said Capt. Carin Kenny, a pilot and chair of the WestJet Encore ALPA Master Executive Council.

“In the wake of this vote, we are hopeful management finally understands that more must done to address the issues that clearly remain for our pilots,” Kenny added.

In a written statement, WestJet chief operating officer Diederik Pen said the rejection won’t impact airline operations, but added the company was disappointed by the vote results.

“We are disappointed to learn that our WestJet Encore pilots have rejected an agreement that is distinctly competitive within Canada’s airline industry and solutioned their unique concerns,” said Pen. “Our tentative agreement represented a robust negotiation process that got us to our final offer, and while we will meet with ALPA to determine next steps, we will hold firm on what is reasonable to ensure we can continue providing meaningful employment and affordable air travel to Canadians.”

Despite the reassurance that airline operations won’t be affected, travellers could still be tempted to buy cancellation or interruption insurance. But they shouldn’t mull it over too long, said Martin Firestone, president of insurance brokerage Travel Secure Inc.

“Because a strike or lockout hasn’t been officially declared yet, you should still be able to buy insurance and be covered. But once something’s officially declared, it becomes a known cause, like COVID,” said Firestone.

Terms of the tentative agreement weren’t released publicly.

WestJet Airlines delaying integration of Sunwing Airlines to 2025

WestJet is pushing back its planned integration of Sunwing Airlines, which the Calgary-based carrier acquired last year.

In an email, WestJet said it will weave the discount airline’s fleet into its own by April 27, 2025, six months after the integration date initially set for this October.

Rick Jones, WestJet’s interim head of route planning, told a conference Monday that the postponement relates to pilot training as well as the measurement units used in the cockpit.

WestJet says both airlines will continue with “business as usual” for their winter flight schedules.

The longer timeline means it will be nearly a year until aviators can fly each other’s planes, as pilot shortages continue to plague the industry.

Aviation expert John Gradek says wrangling over worker seniority for pilots slated to fly under the same banner remains a point of contention.

Just a guess.. lbs versus kg. Some of you old-timer AC folks could probably give us an education in that department. 😄

It's definitely fuel. The WS aircraft are programmed in pounds and the Sunwing fleet is in kilograms. As for pilot training, I suspect the folks at TC asked for more than was proposed in their first transition plan.

The CEO of WestJet Airlines says he is calling for a full federal government review of the way airports and aviation infrastructure in Canada are funded. 

Alexis von Hoensbroech told a Calgary business audience Wednesday that Canada's "user pay" model for aviation infrastructure needs rethinking in light of ongoing public concerns about air travel affordability.

Canada's major airports are all operated on federally owned lands by private, not-for-profit organizations.

They must pay rent to the federal government based on a proportion of their revenues.

Airports earn money by charging fees to airlines, to businesses like restaurants and to passengers through ticket surcharges such as "airport improvement fees."

Von Hoensbroech says these charges drive up the cost of flying in Canada. He says WestJet believes the federal government should stop collecting airport rents in order to make travel more affordable.

WestJet planning new fare category for travellers willing to forgo carry-on bag

CALGARY — WestJet Airlines has plans to soon introduce a new cheaper fare category that would be available to travellers willing to fly without a carry-on bag.

CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech says the new fare category will be introduced within "a couple of weeks."

He told a Calgary business audience Wednesday that the new "ultra-low" price offering will appeal to travellers seeking the lowest fares but will also free up overhead bin space for other passengers.

 

Travellers who purchase the cheapest fare will not have the option to put a bag in the overhead bins, though they will still be permitted to store a knapsack or purse underneath the seat in front of them.

Von Hoensbroech acknowledged that having large numbers of passengers jockeying for limited overhead bin space has become a problem on full flights.

Last month, Calgary-based WestJet launched what it calls its "extended comfort" fare category, which offers passengers access to a number of perks — including preferential access to overhead bins.

CALGARY — WestJet has its eye on a number of used aircraft it hopes to add to its fleet to offset delays on pending aircraft deliveries from Boeing, the CEO of the Calgary-based carrier said.

Alexis von Hoensbroech told a Calgary business audience Wednesday that WestJet is in the market for used planes in the wake of the ongoing situation at the embattled U.S. aircraft manufacturer.

 

The airline has a firm order for 58 new Boeing airplanes to be delivered between now and 2028, but a door plug blowout on a Boeing Max 737 plane flown by Alaska Airlines in January prompted U.S. regulators to halt a production expansion at the U.S. aircraft maker until an investigation can be completed.

Von Hoensbroech said WestJet remains confident in the safety and quality of Boeing airplanes, but the manufacturer's challenges are inhibiting WestJet's own plans to grow its fleet and add new routes.

"It’s slowing us down right now. We were supposed to receive eight aircraft this year ... right now we are down to four (expected) and my best guess is we’ll get probably two," he said.

One possible source of used planes that WestJet is keen on to fill its unmet demand are the nine Boeing Max 8 planes previously leased by Lynx Air.

Lynx was a Calgary-based discount carrier that shut down in February, a few days after receiving creditor protection and less than two years after launching its first flight.

Von Hoensbroech said he is optimistic WestJet will be able to obtain "at least a share" of those planes.

"We are trying to get through this (Boeing delay) from the used market. And I guess over the next couple of weeks we'll probably have some news that we've been successful," he said.

"I think we will be able to deliver the growth that we have foreseen."

Last month, United Airlines said a deal with Boeing would provide the carrier with "credit memos" for future purchases to compensate for financial damages done by a three-week grounding of its 737 Max 9s and rescheduled deliveries.

Credit memos are written acknowledgments that the buyer is owed money back.

On Wednesday, Von Hoensbroech said "the public space" is not the place to discuss any compensation agreements that WestJet may have with the aircraft supplier, but suggested the carrier has not been left entirely hanging.

"You can expect that the contracts that we have with Boeing would always cater to the eventuality that the airplanes have been delivered late," he told reporters.

Von Hoensbroech added he recently personally met with Boeing executives and walked the firm's entire production line in Seattle to better understand what is going on with the company.

"I can say with utmost confidence, they make really great airplanes — and they know where they screwed things up," he said.

"They do have to fix a couple of things on their production line, there’s no doubt ... And I’d rather them take a slower pace than have them not fixing the problems that they have.”

Von Hoensbroech also took the opportunity Wednesday to call for a full federal government review of the way airports and aviation infrastructure in Canada are funded. WestJet believes the federal government should freeze aviation-related surcharges and fees and stop collecting airport rents in order to make travel more affordable.

"When millions and millions of Canadians have no way to travel except by air, I think it’s a reasonable ask," he said.

(Reuters) - Canadian airline WestJet Group said on Thursday its load controllers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), ratified the first collective bargaining agreement between the two parties.

The agreement will come into effect on July 1 and will be in place until Dec. 31, 2028, WestJet said.

The airline, which is owned by Onex Corp, had reached a tentative agreement with the union earlier this month.

The process here seems a bit strange to me, maybe just a different way of doing things. 

It didn't used to be normal practice to run a supposed tentative agreement up a membership-vote flagpole, with rejection merely resuming negotiations. The MEC Chair spoke positively about the previous TA, so seems like it went to the membership with the blessing of the committee, and it was rejected - times past, that would be a repudiation of the committee, unless it went to the vote without the Negot's Committee's ratification recommendation.

Whatever works on that property, I guess. Just a :Scratch-Head: from the cheapest seats.

I wonder if the expanded winter schedule will result in an expansion of the YEG crew base that was published on Feb 2023 means that the YEG crew base will be expanded?

EDMONTON, AB, June 4, 2024 /CNW/ - WestJet today revealed highlights of its Edmonton winter 2024/2025 flight schedule, outlining significant growth and commitment to the region, including record level domestic investments. Boosting its overall capacity by more than 20 per cent compared to winter 2023, WestJet will operate the city's largest-ever network to and from Edmonton. Edmonton reaps benefits of WestJet's record setting investment in region

Daily flights to Atlanta opens gateway to U.S. destinations

This winter, WestJet is bolstering its transborder winter service by providing daily connectivity to Atlanta. Through direct connectivity to Atlanta and Minneapolis, guests will enjoy the advantages of WestJet's codeshare agreement with Delta Airlines, granting access to hundreds of additional U.S. destinations from two of Delta's busiest hubs.

WestJet announces SuperUltraBasic fare where customers just stay home and give them money

CALGARY – Days after announcing an UltraBasic fare that includes no carry-on bags or seat selection, WestJet has announced a SuperUltraBasic ticket that skips the plane ride entirely. 

“Here at WestJet, we realise that Canadians hate flying with WestJet,” said a WestJet representative. “So why not avoid all the stress and exhaustion of dealing with us by sending us 100 bucks and then enjoying a nice, quiet evening at home?” 

For an extra $60, WestJet will text a SuperUltraBasic ticket holder a picture of the arrival concourse at the Canadian airport of their choice. And, for an extra $85, a WestJet representative will come to your house, remove a beloved article of clothing, and ensure you never see it again.

 

WestJet also announced that this has somehow made all of their other services more expensive. 

“This new ticket is so convenient,” said frequent flyer Greg Cardinal. “Dealing with WestJet is like haggling with a more impersonal Satan, and the SuperUltraBasic ticket minimizes my interactions with the company. Sure, I won’t get to my destination, but I can serve myself all the little bags of pretzels I want.” 

WestJet is advertising its new ticket with slogans like “Our pilots are overworked and if you think about it that’s really your fault,” “Do you really want to visit Edmonton?” and “Statistically, Mom will likely cling to life in her nursing home for another year” placed over an image of a Boeing plane shedding parts during an emergency landing. 

“As Canadians grapple with the rising cost of living, we’ve found a way to make travel cheaper than ever,” WestJet’s spokesman said. “Just don’t do it and pretend you did. Is anyone really going to call you out if you lie about visiting Montreal over a long weekend? You’d probably just eat a bunch of poutine and get drunk anyway. Frankly, you assholes should be grateful we ever let you on our planes to begin with.”

At press time, WestJet revealed a MegaSuperUltraBasic ticket where the company just reaches into your bank account and withdraws 50 bucks whenever it needs a little extra spending money.
