Delta Air Lines is offering one unique way to view the historic 2024 solar eclipse: by plane.

On April 8, 2024, travelers taking the special Delta flight 1218 from Austin to Detroit will enjoy viewing the eclipse’s peak during its travel times. The flight will operate on an A220-300 plane, which offers larger windows, and will be in the air from 12:15 p.m. CT to 4:20 p.m. ET.

“This flight is the result of significant collaboration and exemplifies the close teamwork Delta is known for — from selecting an aircraft with larger windows to determining the exact departure time from Austin and the experiences at the gate and in the air,” said Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning.

“Thanks to teams across the company, the idea of viewing a total eclipse from the air will become a reality for our customers," Beck continued.

Even if you can’t book this exact flight, travelers should bring their solar eclipse viewing glasses for these specific flights, all flying on April 8: DL 5699; DL 924; DL 2869; DL 1001; DL 1683.

“The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” said Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist. “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”

A report made in December predicted that one to four million people are expected to travel specifically to see the 2024 solar eclipse. Cruise companies, tour operators and now airlines are joining in on the cosmic fun.

Southwest Airlines released a list of flights offering viewing opportunities back in October, 2023.

The Vulcan....I was instructing at CFB Gimli when a Vulcan landed there to pick up one of the Tutor instructors....(OHB)  Ormon Haydon Baillie. This young fellow was well connected with the Brass Hats in the UK and the RAF diverted the Vulcan to pick him up and take him back to the UK for Christmas with his family.

"OB" purchased a T-33 and became the "driver" of the BLACK KNIGHT shortly after he completed his instructional tour. I don't think money was an issue for his family as he also had a Sea Fury , a CF100 and also aquired a Mustang. The Mustang had not quite been painted when he took it for a spin........the information I have is that he did a VERY low level roll and the torque  did him in (1977)

Facinating! That thing could fly so fast, it would start to melt! I refueled one of these in West Germany, although the Americans will deny it was ever there. It was on it's way back to England after bombing Libya in 1986. Most of the European countries had denied overflight for the mission, so they had to take a very long roundabout route to get to their target. The Americans did a rehearsal for this mission in Goose Bay. More info here:

I commented a couple of weeks ago my concern about over reliance on technology and  a lack of basic skills……here is another sad accident involving a perfectly good airplane:

Meet the U.S. Air Force’s new F-35A Demo pilot and commander. Capt. Melanie Kluesner, call sign MACH, will showcase the Lightning II stealth fighter at air shows nationwide in 2024.

MACH comes onboard replacing the former demo pilot and team commander, Maj. Kristin “BEO” Wolfe. BEO has been the demo pilot since 2020, and has been training MACH over the last several months to get her certified to lead the team and fly demos for millions of spectators.

Capt. Kluesner and the team come from the 421st Fighter Squadron, 388th Fighter Wing at Hill AFB, Utah. The veteran combat fighter pilot graduated from University of Southern California in 2014, and comes from a military family.

MACH brings over 1,000 hours of experience flying aircraft including the T-6A Texan II, T-38 Talon, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-35B and of course, the F-35A Lightning II.

MACH, on the left,  needs a new flight suit that fits her 5'5" frame 😁

Those of you who want to see the show IN CANADA will have to journey to Bagottville QC
