Andrew Dawson, President of Tour Operations for Sunwing, commented on the news, "Saving our customers time and money by providing convenient, direct flight services from their local airport has always been a key priority for us. Sunwing Airlines already offers flights to over 45 of the most popular sun destinations from over 30 departure airports coast to coast. With this new agreement, even more Canadians will be able to experience our top-rated resorts (including leading chains such as Royalton Luxury Resorts, RIU Hotels & Resorts, Planet Hollywood Hotels & Resorts) as part of a valued-added vacation package departing from their local airport."

All Sunwing vacation packages with Swoop flights include one complimentary item of checked luggage, round-trip airport to hotel transfers, assistance from Sunwing Experiences representatives throughout, the option to benefit from savings by pre-purchasing Sunwing Experiences excursions at the time of booking and more.

"It's a privilege to be entrusted with carrying Sunwing travellers onboard Swoop flights to our extensive network in Mexico," said Steven Greenway, President, Swoop. "Partnering with a well-respected tour operator who shares our vision of making travel affordable and more accessible is a welcome opportunity for Canadians who want to travel more."

Sunwing customers that take advantage of Swoop's extensive network of flight services can now benefit from even greater access to some of Mexico's most popular vacation destinations. A new departure airport now available as part of this agreement is Abbotsford, where travellers can take advantage of twice-weekly flights to Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. The popular vacation destination of Cancun is now within easy reach for Sunwing customers in London if they choose to take advantage of the twice-weekly Swoop flight service as part of their vacation package.
Vacationers departing from Hamilton can now select from both Sunwing's and Swoop's regular flight services to Cancun – giving them the choice of four different departure days each week (including both Saturday and Sunday). Vacationers from Edmonton will enjoy additional weekend departure options to reach Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. Finally, the addition of Swoop flight services from Winnipeg to Los Cabos has tripled the choice of departure days for customers travelling from the region, with new flights options departing Sundays and Wednesdays.

Wow. Unless I am mistaken this represents the first time that Sunwing Travel has subcontracted flights away from Sunwing Airlines.

It is an interesting development as SWG is a vertically integrated company that tends to use in house resources in order to ensure quality control. I am curious if the underlying rationale is that SWG simply wants to buy seats in markets where it cannot fill an aircraft, or if there are cost issues here (SWOOP being a potentially less expensive vendor than Sunwing Airlines).

I wonder how the SW pilots and FA’s feel about this development.

How about WestJet Vacations.....  Would there be any impact?

Very clever move! So far Onex has played this really well and got Air Canada exactly where they want it. Its vanity is its great folly, and Onex is several moves ahead!

Now, if only I could have a penny for every time Marshall started a thread about Swoop or WestJet!

Determination No. A-2019-173

October 1, 2019

APPLICATION by Sunwing Airlines Inc. (Sunwing), on behalf of itself and GetJet Airlines UAB (GetJet), pursuant to section 60 of the Canada Transportation Act, S.C., 1996, c. 10, as amended (CTA), and section 8.2 of the Air Transportation Regulations, SOR/88-58, as amended (ATR).

Case number:
19-05382

Sunwing, on behalf of itself and GetJet, has applied to the Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) for an approval to permit Sunwing to provide its scheduled international service between Canada and each of the following countries: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico, using one aircraft with flight crew provided by GetJet, beginning on October 2, 2019, to October 31, 2019.

Sunwing has also requested an exemption from the application of subsection 8.2(2) of the ATR, which requires the filing of an application for an approval at least 15 days before the first planned flight. The Agency finds that compliance with subsection 8.2(2) of the ATR is impractical in this case. Accordingly, the Agency, pursuant to paragraph 80(1)(c) of the CTA, exempts Sunwing from the application of subsection 8.2(2) of the ATR.

Sunwing is licensed to operate the relevant scheduled international services, large aircraft.

The Agency has considered the application and the material in support and is satisfied that it meets the remaining requirements of section 8.2 of the ATR.

Accordingly, the Agency, pursuant to paragraph 60(1)(b) of the CTA and section 8.2 of the ATR, approves the use by Sunwing of one aircraft with flight crew provided by GetJet, and the provision by GetJet of such aircraft and flight crew to Sunwing, to permit Sunwing to provide its scheduled international service on licensed routes between Canada and each of the following countries: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico, using one aircraft and flight crew provided by GetJet, beginning on October 2, 2019, to October 31, 2019.

This approval is subject to the following conditions:

  1. Sunwing shall continue to hold the valid licence authority.
  2. Commercial control of the flights shall be maintained by Sunwing. GetJet shall maintain operational control of the flights and shall receive payment based on the rental of the aircraft and crew and not on the basis of the volume of traffic carried or other revenue-sharing formula.
  3. Sunwing and GetJet shall continue to comply with the insurance requirements set out in subsections 8.2(4), 8.2(5) and 8.2(6) of the ATR.
  4. Sunwing shall continue to comply with the public disclosure requirements set out in section 8.5 of the ATR.

Sunwing Airlines to halt operations after March 23 amid pandemic

Tue Mar 17, 2020 - The Globe and Mail
Eric Atkins - Transportation Reporter

Holiday carrier Sunwing Airlines is temporarily halting operations, becoming the first Canadian airline to do so amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Toronto-based Sunwing said it is no longer taking passengers south, and will suspend all flights once it has flown its customers back to Canada from resort destinations in Mexico, South America, the Caribbean and Florida.

About 470 pilots have been told flights will end after March 23 and were issued layoff notices, said Jerry Dias, head of Unifor, the employees’ union. Sunwing has a fleet of about 40 Boeing 737s. The privately owned company flies domestic routes as well as vacation trips to sun spots in the Caribbean and Europe.

Rachel Goldrick, a spokeswoman for Sunwing, said the shutdown is “temporary” and will last until April 10, but “at this time we cannot confirm when commercial southern flight operations will resume. That is why Sunwing was forced to communicate layoffs to our flight and cabin crew members [Monday] evening.”

She said the carrier intends to recall the pilots and flight attendants when service resumes. “This unprecedented situation has had a drastic impact on our business during a short space of time,” she said.

Sunwing’s parent company, Sunwing Travel Group, bills itself as the largest “vertically integrated” travel company in North America, with $3-billion in yearly revenue from divisions that include three tour operators and more than 7,000 hotel rooms at vacation resorts in the Caribbean.

The first of four Sunwing “rescue flights” from Toronto and Montreal departed on Monday to bring 500 Canadians home from Honduras, Aruba and Panama, countries that have announced border closings, she said.

On Tuesday, “we expect to bring over 11,000 customers home to Canada and we are committed to doing so until all our customers are safely home,” Ms. Goldrick said. “Customers are returning on their scheduled flights, with any remaining seats being used to accommodate other Sunwing customers wanting to return earlier at no additional cost.”

A global airline group on Tuesday said most airlines have only enough cash to survive for three months, and predicted a large number would fail because of the pandemic that has closed some borders and caused a steep plunge in demand for air travel.

Mr. Dias and Sunwing added their voices to calls for government aid to prop up the industry.

“We will not accept any situation where workers are left to fend for themselves, not at Sunwing, not anywhere," he said. “That’s why we’ve called on all levels of government to confront this unprecedented pandemic with unprecedented action to protect the livelihoods of workers affected by this crisis.”

And it goes both ways.  A certain supposedly knowledgable, genius, rah-rah WestJet poster who no longer shares his infinite wisdom here recently posted on a different forum that Porter had made a smart move and that it would soon be back.  This after assuring us all here for years on end that Porter was about to go up the spout.

I think you can assume that Porter has the proceeds of the terminal sale leaseback to lean on, but the question is how much of it will Deluce be willing to burn, how much will the feds do to help the airlines. Very much unknown at this point.

Sunwing repatriates a total of 44,000 Canadians to date

Provided by Sunwing Vacations Inc./Globe Newswire

flysunwing_mobile-sunwing.png?w=720

TORONTO, March 20, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As part of its efforts to repatriate Canadians, Sunwing is bringing home an additional 11,000 Canadians today, which will bring the total number of repatriated Sunwing customers to 44,000 to date.

Sunwing is operating approximately 60 flights to various holiday destinations, leaving today, in order to bring these Canadians home safely. The schedule may change as the situation on the ground in various destinations continues to evolve.

Sunwing also continues to offer available seats on its repatriation flights from southern destinations to stranded Canadians, free of charge – including for non-Sunwing customers. “We understand a lot of Canadians are still stranded outside the country and struggling to get home,” said Stephen Hunter, CEO of Sunwing Travel Group. “That’s why we want to open up any extra capacity we have. It’s the Canadian thing to do.” We expect to have all Sunwing customers home by Monday March 23, at which time all Sunwing flights will be temporarily suspended. At our current estimate, Sunwing will be operating almost 400 flights and spending more than $26 million to bring these Canadians home safely, at no extra cost to the customer.

Canadians looking to return home on a Sunwing flight should check the most up to date flight times at https://www.sunwing.ca/pages/en/flight-status-alerts. If a northbound flight is operating from their destination, they should make their way to the departure airport and present themselves to the Sunwing Airlines check in counter. If space remains prior to departure at the closure of check in, any available seats will be offered to Canadians or Canadian permanent residents free of charge. Given the unprecedented situation the focus of our company and destination team remains on the repatriation of our customers. We therefore ask to please refrain from calling us since availability can only be confirmed at the airport ahead of the closure of check in for each flight service.

Sunwing returns to responsible travel, first flights since March take off

Sunwing Travel Group’s acting Chief Medical Advisor on board first Sunwing Airlines flight to Cancun and documenting Safe with Sunwing commitment throughout journey

Dr Nord Sunwing’s acting Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Nord, on board a Sunwing Airlines flight to Cancun

TORONTO, Nov. 09, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sunwing Airlines has returned to the skies, with the first flight since March taking off from Toronto Pearson International Airport and landing in Punta Cana International Airport on Friday, November 6. The flight marked Sunwing’s return to responsible travel, after grounding its aircraft for over 230 days in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Canadians back to paradise on board Sunwing Airlines,” said Mark Williams, President of Sunwing Airlines. “After months of staying home and with colder weather just around the corner, many Canadians are eager to return to the tropics. We are excited to be back in the skies, helping sun-seekers travel safely and responsibly.”

Although the operator has been sending Canadians to the tropics since August with the help of third-party carriers, Friday’s flight marked the official return to service for Sunwing Airlines. Travellers can look forward to departures from Toronto to Punta Cana on Fridays and Sundays, to Montego Bay on Fridays and Saturdays, and to Cancun on Saturdays and Sundays. All customers will enjoy a seamless travel experience with flights either on board Sunwing Airlines or a third-party carrier.

In September, Sunwing partnered with global healthcare leader Medcan to advise on the Safe with Sunwing program, and to provide ongoing support for customer and employee health and safety. Dr. Peter Nord, Chief Medical Officer at Medcan, was appointed as Sunwing Travel Group’s acting Chief Medical Advisor and was on board the inaugural Sunwing flight from Toronto to Cancun on Saturday, November 7.

“I had the pleasure of travelling with Sunwing from Toronto to Cancun this weekend,” commented Dr. Peter Nord. “The journey was seamless from check-in and boarding to the flight and resort arrival. The high Canadian standards that Sunwing has implemented are evident through every step of the vacation journey. I can confidently say that, with the Safe with Sunwing commitment in place, Canadians can travel with peace of mind.”

Dr. Nord recently took the time to answer some of the most frequently asked questions that Canadians have about travelling safely with Sunwing. You can view the first of his of his three-part “Ask Me Anything” video series on Sunwing’s YouTube channel and website.

Dr. Nord will also be broadcasting live from Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa throughout the week on Sunwing’s social media channels, including Instagram and Facebook, sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the resort amenities and safety protocols that Canadian travellers can look forward to when they vacation at Sunwing’s Royalton Luxury Resorts.

Sunwing has spent months developing the Safe with Sunwing commitment to help customers travel with peace of mind. As the only travel provider that owns the airline that customers fly on, the transfer buses that travel to and from hotels, and over 30 Sunwing-owned-and-operated hotels throughout the tropics, Sunwing can ensure that the highest Canadian health and safety standards are in place throughout the entire vacation experience so customers can enjoy a hassle-free getaway.

Most recently, Sunwing became the first Canadian airline to treat all aircraft with AEGIS Microbe Shield®, a powerful antimicrobial spray that controls and prevents the growth of bacteria on surfaces, as part of the Safe with Sunwing commitment.

In the case of flight and cabin crew it should always be worn above your wings.

Also being picky: Re wings, Military or civilian? The Canadian Legion only says:

How to wear a Poppy

The Poppy should be worn with respect on the left side, over the heart. The Legion’s lapel Poppy is a sacred symbol of Remembrance and should not be affixed with any pin that obstructs the Poppy. Also available through some Branches is the Legion's reusable black centre Poppy pin to affix your lapel Poppy.

Quite a selection of where to wear it in the Canadian Military.

Air Lease Corporation has delivered of two new Boeing 737-MAX aircraft on long-term lease to Sunwing Airlines.  However,  the global leasing firm and Sunwing are trying to hush up the fact that there are the 737 MAX models, by using the now commonplace 737-8 designator. These aircraft, featuring CFM International LEAP-1B27 engines, are the third and fourth new Boeing 737-MAX aircraft to deliver to Sunwing from ALC’s order book with Boeing.
“ALC is pleased to announce these two new Boeing 737-8 deliveries to Sunwing Airlines today,” said John L. Plueger, Chief Executive Officer and President of Air Lease Corporation.  “These aircraft mark ALC’s first 737-8 deliveries since the grounding and will provide state-of-the-art efficiency, cabin comfort, and advancement of Sunwing’s environmental sustainability initiatives.”
“We thank ALC for the delivery of two new Boeing 737-8 aircraft, and look forward to integrating them into our existing fleet,” said Mark Williams, President, Sunwing Airlines.  “The new planes provide advanced technology, comfort and fuel efficiency, and will undoubtedly offer Sunwing Airlines customers an enhanced travel experience when they are placed into commercial service.”
