The one-million square-foot facility will combine thousands of highly-skilled employees with 21st century production and tooling innovation. Bombardier employs the highest caliber technology throughout the manufacturing process of the Global 7500 business jets, including a state-of-the-art automated positioning system that uses laser-guided measuring to ensure major aircraft structures, such as the wing and fuselage, are joined consistently and perfectly each time. I'll be sad to see the Downsview plant disappear but it's in the middle of a city with a horrible housing crisis and a shortage of land and it's situated on the subway line. Add to that that moving the plant anywhere else other than YYZ would displace a few thousand local workers. All in All this seems like win win for everybody doesn't it? boestar Posted December 4, 2019 Share Posted December 4, 2019 the downsview plant is already losing everything else which leaves it about 1/4 populated. While it has a great history, it is sitting on some of the best land in the city for development. Moving to YYZ is not a bad idea however YYZ is not the best place to operate test flights. "The announcement of this new manufacturing facility is an important step in advancing the long term job security of our members at the Bombardier Downsview facility," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "These are hardworking, highly skilled, and well trained workers who can look forward to a more secure future at the new location." The Downsview facility currently employs 2,100 Unifor members represented by locals 112 and 673 in the production, office, and technical divisions as well as numerous other direct and indirect jobs. In 2018, Bombardier announced its intention to sell the facility creating anxiety and uncertainty for workers. "We wanted reassurance that Bombardier would continue to assemble the Global family of aircraft in the Toronto area, and todays announcement provides it," said Scott McIlmoyle, President of Unifor Local 112. "Our members have been through a lot recently. I couldn't be happier for them." "I am proud of the determination and resolve our members showed throughout the past year of uncertainty," said Maryellen McIlmoyle, President of Unifor Local 673. "This agreement brings tremendous relief to Bombardier workers and their families." The long-term lease agreement with the GTAA runs until 2058 and the new facility's planned completion date is in 2023. In addition to selling the Downsview property in 2018, Bombardier also sold its Q400 aircraft program to De Havilland Aircraft Company. The Q400 is currently assembled at Downsview. De Havilland workers are also members of Unifor Local 112 and 673. Both locals and Unifor National will continue to work with De Havilland and all levels of government in an effort to secure the Q400 program beyond 2022. boestar Posted December 5, 2019 Share Posted December 5, 2019 Logistically this works better for Bombardier since the wings and centre section from MHI are Pre-Assembled in Mississauga currently and disassembled and shipped by truck to Downsview. Seeker Posted December 9, 2019 Share Posted December 9, 2019 Kind of ridiculous to tie up valuable YYZ resources (both physical and airspace/time) with a business that does not rely on passengers or air cargo. The proper place to put a manufacturing facility of this size is YHM, YPQ or YKF. All 3 of these airports are underused and have tons of open space.
