Kip Powick
A passenger who was bumped off a full flight has scored the maximum prize — a $10,000 travel voucher. A spokesman for United Airlines confirmed Friday that a passenger got the big voucher, but he didn’t name the person. In a series of tweets, Allison Preiss of Washington, D.C., says she was rewarded after being asked to give up her seat. Preiss says she was trying to fly from Dulles Airport outside Washington to Austin, Texas, for a bachelorette party. A broken seat meant the airline had one too many passengers, but nobody volunteered to leave so United picked her because she was the lowest-paying passenger. Preiss tweets that an employee offered a $2,000 voucher but she wanted cash. Then a United agent offered a $10,000 voucher.
conehead
She’s lucky, she could’ve been stuffed in the overhead bin.
blues deville
On the surface the $10000 voucher sounds good but it will probably be used to ride in a couple otherwise empty first class seats on the next time she takes United.
rudder
Ability to oversell is a cost-benefit driven tool. The value of vouchers is more than offset by not flying around as many empty seats on high demand routes with significant no show rates. Having said that, the regulators have the airlines over the barrel on emptying their wallets when it comes to denied boarding. This passenger just knew how to play the game better than most. Geminoid
Will the public, knowing that United has paid $10000, demand higher compensation now?
