Phoenix into Show Low at 11,000 feet, about 20 miles west. He never saw anything, just BAM! Bird strike at 250kts or so.

Wind. Had glasses on, took them off and put a spare pair on, landed at Show Low. Ambulance. 18 stitches. Black eyes. Blood everywhere in the cockpit.

As posted on the "other" forum:

SHOW LOW, Ariz. - An amazing story from the White Mountains area. Imagine you're flying two miles above the Earth when you smash into a bird that shatters your plane's windshield and leaves you bloodied.

The impact of the crash was a mess, but the pilot managed to land the plane safely after the bird strike.

The flight was carrying cargo - small packages from Phoenix to Show Low on Wednesday. As the plane began its decent into Show Low, it struck the large bird at about 11,000 feet.

The pilot suffered some minor lacerations on his face and a bruised shoudler. He received eight stitches and was released from a hospital in Show Low.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the pilot, The Roger Wutke, was the only person onboard the Ameriflight Beechcraft C99. The impact was so violent it knocked the glasses and headset off Wutke.

Unpressurized aircraft... that's why the bird was able to make it through the windshield. A sledge hammer usually doesn't make it through a pressurized aircraft windscreen.

How pressurized is your typical jetliner on final at 1,000 feet(going 300 Km/h)?

That is a pretty amazing piece of flying getting this "bird" wink.gif down. Put yourself in his shoes for a minute.... blasted by a bird, blasted by wind, no forward vis. .... sheesh (I am betting he moved to the right seat to get her down).... oh ya... imagine the smell blink.gif
