I put the supersonic passenger aircraft in the same category as the new version of the flying car we se every 5 years - technically possible but "not economically viable".

Exactly.  Every 10 years the gov spends 10-20 million doing a study that, every time, shows it would cost ridiculous amounts of money, serve very few people and save 20 minutes assuming everything works perfectly.

They have been used quite effectively for that purpose in Japan, China and France.

The difference is investing in a proper network and maintaining it.

Riding the MAGLEV from downtown Shanghai to the airport is pretty cool at 430kph!  Unfortunately, they have dialed it back since I rode it to a max of 300kph.

Yes and the population base to use them is the reason why.  We would not be able to cover operating cost based on the actual usage

Ridership ever if all passengers boarding at Pearson used the train could not support the cost of building and operation.

How many people go to the Toronto airport each year?
Pearson is the largest and busiest airport in Canada, handling 36.3 million passengers in 2022.

For example,

for example The TGV network in France carries about 110 million passengers a year. The high-speed tracks, maintained by SNCF Réseau, are subject to heavy regulation.

Number of passengers carried via JR Shinkansen in Japan FY 2015-2022. In the fiscal year 2022, Japan Railways' Shinkansen high-speed trains carried around 295 million passengers, increasing from 195 million passengers in the preceding fiscal year.Jan 4, 2024
