Some frightening moments for passengers on board a WestJet flight from Vancouver to Toronto this morning.

The plane took off at 7 a.m., but had to turn around and make an emergency landing at YVR half an hour later after the crew smelled smoke.

Unconfirmed reports say it may have come from a possible electrical fire.

All 138 people on board landed safely.

The passengers are all being re-booked on the next possible flight.

EVENING CTV News.........WJ spokesman stated that the "smell of smoke" originated from an "overfill" of oil on one of the engines.

On the bright side, according to the article, the Thunder Bay aircraft apparently had a l/f of at least 108%.....

According to the article about the YQT aircraft:

It landed on Saturday, but the last of the passengers did not get to YYZ until Sunday afternoon?

They probably had a look around and decided to stay for visit - Thunder Bay in December - doesn't suit me but I guess someone might like it!

I was in line at security several years ago in YYZ heading to YVR. There were 2 guys a few people in fron of me joking about bombs and such. After a short time 2 RCMP officers showed up and escorted them away. they were supposed to be on my flight but I never saw them again. I guess a security person overheard the conversation and raised the alarm.

These conversations, even in jest, are taken seriously.

THUNDER BAY – It was an unexpected stop for passengers on a Westjet flight bound for Toronto. Thunder Bay Police report that “A Westjet flight had to make an unexpected landing in Thunder Bay just after 5:00PM today due to an unruly passenger”.

A male became agitated on a flight which had originated in Vancouver and was scheduled to arrive in Toronto on Saturday evening. The crew of flight 644 restrained the 27 year old man, and the aircraft landed in Thunder Bay without incident. There was an added concern that the man allegedly uttered a threat regarding a bomb.

Thunder Bay Police Service, Airport Operation Specialists of the Thunder Bay International Airport responded along with the O.P.P. Explosive Disposal Unit. As a precaution, passengers on board the Boeing 737 were deplaned and the aircraft was searched. The aircraft and passenger luggage was being checked by police and airport security Saturday night.

The male, who is a Portuguese national, was taken into custody by the Thunder Bay Police Service. He was escorted to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for a medical assessment. The R.C.M.P. will also be investigating this incident.

The 118 passengers of the Westjet flight will spend the night in Thunder Bay until Sunday when it is expected that they will resume their flight to Toronto.

The T.B.P.S. Criminal Investigations Branch will continue the investigation.
