The inaugural revenue flight of new Canadian airline OWG has taken off from Toronto’s Pearson International airport, headed to Santa Clara Abel Santamaria airport in Cuba.

The airline is a project of Canadian passenger and freight charter carrier Nolinor Aviation, which announced plans to launch the new brand in July, in the middle of the coronavirus crisis.

According to flight tracking website Flightaware.com, flight N5730 left Montreal’s Trudeau International airport at 11:11 local time, arriving in Toronto at 12:08 local time. It then left Toronto at 13:23 local time, and is due to land in Cuba about three hours later. It was unclear if the flight from Montreal to Toronto was also a revenue flight or if the aircraft had been repositioned.

An OWG representative confirmed by email this is the airline’s first scheduled flight, but further details were not immediately available.

OWG launches initial scheduled flight from Canada to Cuba

The Montreal-based carrier, which has been operating charter and specialty flights across Canada’s far north for almost three decades, said on 7 July that it was looking to take a slice of the holiday travel market from Canada’s established market leaders.

Nolinor said at the time that it had acquired several Boeing 737-400s with 158 seats earlier this year for OWG, and on 6 July received permission from the government of Canada to launch international service. The airline had been “secretly working since 2018 to create a new airline that will position them in the tourist flight market”. It said it had invested “more than $1 million in a think tank to reinvent the way things are done in this industry”.

The result is an airline called OWG, which stands for “off we go”.

OWG’s planned launch date had been pushed back due to the global health pandemic. Initially, the company said flights would begin on or near 31 August.

For the life of me I just do not understand why an airline, any airline would be using 737 Classics as a startup?

They are maintenance and fuel pigs not supported anymore by the manufacturer anymore. 737 NG's and A320's are dirt cheap now. The desert has many of them that are in line for the chopper that are far better than those.

Makes it easy for other carriers to undercut them though...

Older aircraft = bargain prices,  Current low fuel cost = low operating cost, Who represents the AMEs, FAs, pilots etc? May that also = lower operating cost. Young employees???  If this was a many years ago.... model appears to = WestJet.   ?

This new airline wants to do things differently by putting the well-being of travelers during the pandemic at the very heart of its concerns

MIRABEL, QC, Feb. 23, 2021  /CNW Telbec/ - As part of its HIGH LOVE campaign, OWG airline is offering travelers who lost their deposit because of the pandemic a chance to recover their money or get a credit toward a future flight. The company wants to use this original promotional initiative to bring a little sunshine into the lives of people whose travel plans were cancelled.

At the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, a number of airlines had to cancel hundreds of flights. Since they received no assistance from the government, as was the case in the majority of industrialized countries, some transporters found themselves unable to reimburse their customers. Not only did this situation create turmoil for many travelers, it also made them lose trust in their airlines.

"Currently thousands of travelers have fallen out of love with their traditional transporters. This promotion is our way to tell them that our heart is open and that there is always a local Québec based alternative for those who like to travel," said Marco Prud'Homme, President of OWG.

Open to all travelers
Those who wish to participate in this promotion just have to fill out a form on OWG.COM. They will be asked to explain why they deserve to be chosen based on their story – for example, a ruined wedding anniversary, an important trip canceled or any reason justifying why they deserve to win this sum. The questionnaire offers a choice between being reimbursed in cash or in the form of a credit applicable on a future OWG flight – once it's safe to travel again.

Each week, during an undetermined period, the OWG team will select a winner based on the merits of their storyline. A sum equivalent to the lost amount will be delivered in person by an OWG employee.

A HIGH LOVE promotion
OWG is a new airline launched during the pandemic that reinvents the travel experience by taking its travelers to heart. With this novel promotion, OWG wants to help out consumers being held captive by this crisis, as well as promote its services to travelers.

OWG carried out a first series of flights to Cuba this winter with a 94% satisfaction rating. The airline is offering a new formula based on customer satisfaction and personalized service, such as hearty free meals served on all its flights.
