Kip Powick
How far would a Saturn V rocket move on one gallon of "rocket" fuel ??
ChicoChico
You mean the first gallon? Then answer is zero...since I presume several thousand would be burned before the blessed thing moved an inch.
Mitch Cronin
...but was it already moving? Was it on the ground, in space, or somewhere in between?
Kip Powick
already "flying"
Southshore
That there are a couple of generations asking "what the hell is a Saturn Vee?" Man, we is dating ourselves.
Mitch Cronin
Ahhh... then the answer must be... an infinite distance. It can go forever (until it's trapped by some gravitational influence). No?

Elfric
Saw it on TV the other day. I believe the answer is 5 inches for every gallon.
DEFCON
Mitch The Saturn V is an "in atmosphere" launch booster.
Mitch Cronin
...arghhh. So what's left when the beast get's out of the atmosphere is no longer the Saturn 5 Eh?... k.... Then surely the answer depends where the calculation begins... I see Elfric's says he's heard the answer is 5 inches per gallon... but wouldn't that have to depend how much has already burned, at what altitude, and at what velocity the rocket's already traveling? Maybe that's why Kip called it a stupid question? :S
Kip Powick
That is the answer I was looking for....watched it on Discovery Channel this afternoon. Mileage per gallon of fuel is just slightly less than my boat
Moon The Loon
Yah, but it's only an "averaged" mpg Kip. Depends on when the measurement is taken: T+00:00:00:01 or separation of S1 -00:00.1 Big mother piece of tin whichever way you look at it!
Moon The Loon
Didja see the III? It's only about 1/2 the size. Only designed for earth orbit of LEM and packages. The VAB at the KSC was built for the V, or the equivalent of a 52 storey building. The shuttle is about half that height.
Southshore
YID but I think maybe YSN use ABTAC.
Guest Stone
Kip, I haven't read all the responses so your question may have already been answered but I believe it would be about 5 inches per gallon.
Guest Crow
It's good they don't supply rocket fuel at the airport... imagine mixing that up by mistake. Bet that would make you spill your coffee.
