I read somewhere that he had no formal training and never practiced.I remember that Muppets episode as a favourite. I saw Buddy Rich play live a couple of times. The first was at a session he put on for high school bands at Hamilton Place in '77. There was a Q & A session and he confirmed that he had no formal training - he learned with some encouragement from his dad. He also said that he never read music.
