L-3 Wins Trenton Contract

CFB TRENTON — The future of the remaining employees at Aveos Fleet Performance Inc. here is still up in the air as another company takes over maintenance of the C-150 Polaris Airbus,

Aveos had provided maintenance for the Polaris aircraft at the Trenton air base since December 1992. The company filed for the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) on April 30, in part, due to uncertain work volume across its business lines from Air Canada.

Mirabel, QC-based company L-3 Military Aviation Services (L-3 MAS) has been awarded a one-year contract for the maintenance of the five passenger aircraft.

The 10 remaining Aveos employees (and a few with Air Canada) don't know whether they will be transferred with L-3 or replaced and sent home.

Charlie Bell, manager of the Department of National Defence's (DND) contract with Aveos at CFB Trenton, said the contract between expires July 31, “and we (Aveos and Air Canada employees) will remain under the Aveos umbrella until then,” he said Monday.

“We are still getting paid by Aveos until we hear otherwise. But we still are at an early stage on this new awarded contract now. The new company might hire our 10 Aveos employees (and a few more with Air Canada) or bring their own employees and technicians when they get established here in Trenton later in the summer. I have no idea.”

In a statement released Monday, DND said that due to urgency and to provide for continuous support for its Polaris fleet contractual arrangements “were made to continue to engage the former Aveos and Air Canada employees who had been working on the Airbus at 8 Wing,” read the release.

Under the contract, L-3 MAS will serve as the prime contractor for maintaining the fleet and will provide the day-to-day maintenance of the aircraft at CFB Trenton.

Avianor Inc., acting as a subcontractor to L3-MAS, will provide heavy maintenance for the fleet at the company's facilities in Mirabel, QC, north of Montreal.

The contract has a value of up to $25 million for a period of 10 months.

The C-150 Polaris is a multi-purpose, twin-engine, long-range jet aircraft that is operated by 437 Transport Squadron out of CFB Trenton and used for passenger, freight or medical transport, and VVIP transport for the prime minister and other government/DND officials. Two of the aircraft are also configured for strategic air-to-air refuelling.

What is sad about this is, Air Canada did not even submit a tender for this contract. It has always been a very profitable contract but for reason only the rocket scientists at AC will only know, they did not bid.

You would think that after losing the huge amount in Q1, AC would grab something that makes a substantial profit.

AC's core business is to fly passengers safely, confortably and profitably on convenient scheduled routes. Do you see DND in this picture? I'm actually surprised that they are still flying sports teams on their AC Jetz banner. I'm sure that creative accounting is used to show profitability. It so happens that both Devils and Kings are flown by them.

What different about flying a sked flight from YYZ to YVR over flying a Charter flight from YYZ to YVR. It is, after all, carrying passengers safely, comfortably,and profitabily only on demand instead of scheduled. This could actually make more sense since it only flies when the cost is covered (or supposed to be :) )

Jazz flies Charters and they make money its no different it is a small piece of the business of flying passengers just without the hassle of a schedule.

but not profitable to keep Aveos afloat. I imagine AC didn't bid for the work due to concerns re the Aveos closure.

That contract was an AC contract. It was given over to AVEOS to make it more attractive for the sale.

This is a 10 million dollar profit per year on average, it had been in AC hands for years, so why the sudden lack of interest is the question.

JETZ is a set amount of money, and is very profitable, so why not keep doing it and expand it if possible.

You just lost 200 million is a quarter, I would be taking any and all contracts that turn a profit, including the DND

The DND contract is likely to have included heavy maintenance. AC no longer has an AMO that permits that kind of work.

Neither does L3, they are subbing the heavy to Avionor.

It is going to be interesting to see where they are going to get A310 licensed people to come work for a 10 month contract in trenton!. Good luck with that
