Right from rotation you knew that it wouldn't end well. Until I read they were practising for an airshow, I thought the guy(s) had a death wish, but really now it just appears they were in over their heads, and overconfident in a.) the aircraft's abilities, b.) their abilities, to the extreme. Treating a 300,000lb aircraft like an Extra 300 is just plain dumb, imo, especially at those altitudes.I was on the waterfront in Toronto when the Nimrod went in years ago, watching this mirror image manoeuvre brought back bad memories. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. boestar
Hmmmmm. I wonder where the "cocky Flyboy" stereotype comes from. 10 foot tall and bullet proof they are not.
J.O.
The B52 crash at Fairchild AFB was, in many minds, flown by a pilot who was nothing more than an accident waiting to happen. The aircraft commander, Col. Bud Holland, was a well known cowboy who had excellent hands and feet combined with terrible airmanship, and his wing commander had attempted to have him grounded more than once. But Holland's buddies in the air force command structure denied said requests. The wing commander was so concerned, that he insisted on flying as Holland's copilot on the day of the accident, just to protect the rest of his pilots from having to fly with a guy who couldn't take "no" for an answer. Sadly, even his presence couldn't prevent the accident, which was witnessed by the wing commander's wife and children who were watching at the time along with several other air force families.A summary of Tony Kern's case study into the Fairchild crash can be read here. It's well worth the time, IMHO. Darker Shades of BlueWhat's interesting about this study is that Tony Kern (USAF ret'd) was good friends with Bud Holland, and when he started hearing about the problems that had been reported with Holland's flying, he refused to believe them.
