Do Not skid off the side

That would be Funchal airport in the Madeira Islands. Some of our pilots have flown into that airport from the UK bases. We have to give the Captains special simulator training before flying there. Nasty winds coming off the mountains cause significant mechanical turbulence that have led to several tail strikes and such.

on a runway ?!! ohmy.gif

Runaway would be more like it! He ended up joining the RN during The Big One in memory of the skipper of HMS Hood who he met when he was a pre-teen when Hood visited Madeira. Five years later, that was the end of that friendship. He enlisted when he was 17 (he lied) then got kicked off the boat to go learn to fly. In Canada. BCATP.

He left Funchal when he was 11 and didn't go back until 1978. That's when I first heard about the carrier approach and deck landing skills of the local 737 classic drivers. Scared the crap out of everybody!

Now it's autobrake 2 and idle reverse.

Where has all the fun gone?
