Just heard that WestJet, is now the official airline of the CFL. Was AC the official carrier up to now. If so, congratulations to WestJet and all the organizers of this accomplishment.

CFL takes flight with WestJet

WestJet to title East Division Championship

Toronto, Ontario - The Canadian Football League's momentum continues to soar with today's announcement of its newest corporate partner WestJet, the nation's leading low-fare air carrier. The two-year agreement will designate WestJet as the "Official Airline of the Canadian Football League," including the 2003 and 2004 Grey Cup Games.

Through this partnership, and to support the launch of its new routes throughout Eastern Canada, WestJet will also be the presenting sponsor of the 2003 and 2004 CFL East Division Championship. WestJet will enhance the fan experience by offering football-themed in-flight activities and entertainment for passengers flying between East and West CFL team cities.

"Partnering with WestJet, one of the most recognized and respected airlines in Canada, presents a very exciting opportunity for the CFL and our fans," CFL Commissioner, Tom Wright stated. "WestJet, like the CFL, mirrors Canada in everyway. We are each distinctly Canadian and distinctly homegrown. This partnership will not only leverage our Canadian brands, but more importantly, will allow us to connect with Canadians from coast to coast."

WestJet's President and CEO, Clive Beddoe, agreed stating, "Our partnership with the CFL is an important element of our marketing program for the next two years. With the recent launch of our new service to the Montreal market, we now touch down in all nine CFL cities, making WestJet a natural fit for the CFL. Adding strength to the relationship, our lead position with the CFL's East Division Championship will provide the impact we seek as a proud sponsor of the Canadian League. We look forward to working with the CFL in this uniquely Canadian partnership."

WestJet serves the 26 Canadian cities of Victoria, Comox, Vancouver, Abbotsford/Fraser Valley, Prince George, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Windsor, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Moncton, Halifax, St. John's (beginning June 16) and Gander (beginning June 17). WestJet is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol WJA.

The Canadian Football League operates in nine leading Canadian cities. Its teams compete annually for the Grey Cup, Canada's oldest professional League championship trophy. The 91st Grey Cup will be played in Regina on November 16, 2003.

Not that the nations leading low fare carrier needs any more publicity that it already generates based on the best service, pricing and friendliest airline in the Canadain market, but this certainly says a lot about the future of AC doesn't it "seeker"

Any affiliation with the Canadian Football League is an accomplishment, and something that deserves praise. The CFL is an institution, second to none, just like the "official carrier".

The CFL is a fine institution but to characterize the new partnership as an accomplishment is misleading. I believe that it's a good fit for Westjet and will be an effective advertising stream but the availibilty of this is likely more a function of AC trimming it's advertising budget than anything else, right?

Either that, or the CFL is aligning itself with a carrier that will provide them with the security that travel arragements will be availble to them over the next two years.

You hypothesized and I responded with a hypothesis. Besides, could this just be the begining of what usually happens in CCAA. Look at C3, the moment they announced financial difficulties, bookings dropped off like a tornado. Has AC simply failed to announce a significant drop in future revenue bookings, and this announcement is probably one that may spark other announcements of corporations securing future travel plans as well? Is their more coming?

and bill lamberton was a marketing manager with canadian airlines for many years, and cdn was the cfl official carrier for years and it meant the teams either travelled on cdn/cra sked services or chartered ... some revenue anyway and not low yield.

Small point of note as well. Westjet flies to all cities with a CFL team, AC does not.
