For Kip, and Larry, and Freddy

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna have a drink and think of Larry and the chair.

I'm sorry to hear of his passing Kip. I, like a lot of us here, really appreciated the story you told of him. When you think you've got it bad, just a hint at what some folks deal with, while smiling anyway... It's humbling.

When I was about 14 (shortly before I first ventured out into the big bad world), I met a man we'd now call a "homeless person", downtown on Younge St. someplace... He was probably about 65, or 70 maybe, an alcoholic, alone on this earth, even though he had grown children somewhere who knew nothing of his whereabouts ...His name was Freddy Lupin. I was struck by how little his life seemed to mean to society in general and how thoroughly wrong that seemed. He talked with a few of us for an hour or so and we promised him we'd never forget him.

That was about 30 years ago and I've never forgotten. Somehow, hearing of Larry made me think of him again (I know Larry wasn't in the same situation). Maybe there's no point in saying any of what I've just said, but for the life of me, I can't seem to find the right reason to delete it or avoid hitting the post button.

Thanks to guys like Freddy Lupin and Larry, I can say I know I'm a lucky man.

Cheers to you and to them. (d)

Things aren't going well in this industry so tonight Scuba 02 hosted a dinner party for a friend and his family who are moving to a downsized house. It was a great evening, fond memories of days gone by and an over abundance of good wine and the clincher was copious amounts of xtabentun.

I dug out the article on Larry and re read it. Yeh, I'm still a wee bit blitzed but a tear trickled down my face as I read what I had written. He was so young, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, everything we all fear..... happened to him, he never had what we had, it all vanished in a heartbeat...what the hell happened ??? How does God work???

I am a virtual well of emotions but the predominate feeling is one of sadness, sadness that the young kids of today have no idea what they have...and true...they may loose some of it as the industry tumbles in turmoil but they will NEVER, and I pray, NEVER, have to endure what Larry had to go through.

Very sad out tonight. I hope the youngsters cherish each day they see the sun rise.. I know I do and, Larry, bless his soul, showed me in that brief encounter just how silly some of the things we worry about are.

Too bad not everyone met a Freddy and Larry just so they could see the "other" side of the coin. Gotta go..not sure where, but gotta go. RIP, Larry and Freddy.

Kip

Mitch...I'm really PO'd.... I didn't even go to Larry's funeral, I think that was wrong.

Hi Guys:

I always read your postings finding them for the most part to be calmer and more balanced then the usual fare. I have noticed, however, that these postings seem to veer into rather personal areas. I don't mind but I have one request. You see, I don't know Larry. You obviously put a lot of thought into the posting and then make it in the most public of places but haven't included the background to allow me to follow along. I would gently suggest that there are hundreds or thousands of readers of these messages that also don't get it because they don't know Larry either. Perhaps you could keep this in mind when you choose to post something out of the public realm, either correspond privately or have a care for those of us who are trying to keep up.

My apologies. I guess it has been so long since I posted the story of "Larry" entitled "The Chair" that I have forgotten how many new guys/gals are now on AEF and they, naturally, have no idea what we are talking about.

True, it was a personal experience, but it drove home the point about just how petty some of the stuff we discuss/argue/opinionate about is in the real world. My meeting Larry ocurred when the CP and AC pilots were going at it "hammer and tong" about seniority shortly after the merge and it made me realize that in the end, it just wasn't worth the angst we all seemed to be going through just to protect our turf.

I wrote the meeting up and posted it on AEF just to show others that although we were mired in self absorption about the merge, there were those that didn't come close to sharing the prosperity we already had, as airline employees.

If you haven't read it, let me know and I'll send it to you.

I remember it well, Kip. You wrote it during the stressful 'merger' time. Perhaps you should (re)write it again, during this 'stressful' time, to help everyone put things into perspective.
