The final report is out and if you have an hour or two you can attempt to read and digest the findings, but to me, it is another great example of pilots relying on technology and not their, ( hopefully trained), basic airmanship Certainly there was a problem with the MCAS but at impact the aircraft was close to 500 kts, 33,000 ft/sec descent, and during the entire episode with the ever increasing flight control loads, especially elevator control, neither pilot considered reducing the power. I think most "time-in" pilots know that an increase in speed results in more difficulty with respect to using the MANUAL trim wheel. Of course I wasn't there, but my first instinct would have been to disconnect all technology and go to basic hands on flying, after all they were not in cloud. You can read all the documents both from Ethiopan airlines which stated it was not the pilots fault, to rebuttals from the NSTB. http://www.avherald.com/

  10. The CDS, (Chief of Defence Staff), is presently an army Lt General, (3 Maple leafs), who took over after the Admiral, (4 Maple Leafs), became the subject of an internal investigation. The Canadian Armed Forces normally rotate the CDS between Army, Navy, and Air Force. In theory the CDS talks for all branches but it is no secret that there is a bit of loyalty toward the branch the CDS came from. I don't know who the CDS was when the F-35 was thrown about but again, internal workings like any "company"..... "you get your toys, we get the next batch." The CDS is supposed to be the spokesperson for all 3 branches and takes their recommendations to the, MND, (Minister of National Defence), who in,most cases, doesnt know the pointy end of a boat from the blunt end........but such is life and the troops soldier on
  11. So now 4 times the cost I quoted and NOTHING about annual cost to operate each one of these non-essential toys. We will lose,one, two ????? hopefully none with a loss of life, but the RCAF has not had a "whiz-bang" aircraft that has not become a lawn-dart so each time that happens 1/2 billion dollars has been vaporized........... All that money could been spent on something DND really needs....what a shame.
  12. IF...... there was a timely PA made prior to "impact", I do feel bad for the FAs because they could have been checking belts or locking down the galley but the pax........ In all my years I have never been seated in a flying machine without my seatbelt fastened.

Each F35 is listed at 110.3 million USD which includes all ground support equip etc Annual operating cost per F35 is estimated at 7.1 million USD ((All data from numerous company reports and USAF reports)) Hopefully the govt got a Christmas special deal............but I still think it is a waste of money.......we need SAR and Heavy Transport aircraft.........not fighters.

Embarassing for the RCAF but already on social media sites and gone viral A number of junior officers are also facing administrative action but the RCAF has declined to provide details on numbers of individuals or the actions that have been taken against them. The incident reignites concerns about the culture and attitudes within the Canadian Forces. The Canadian Forces has been trying to deal with sexual misconduct for decades and in 2015 launched yet another crackdown on such actions. In June, a group of fighter pilots from Cold Lake, Alta., gathered to discuss a nickname for a new aviator. The call sign, which would be used to identify the pilot and would be written on their CF-18 fighter aircraft, was based on the male pilot’s consensual relationship with a female Canadian Forces officer. The woman later entered into a consensual same-sex relationship. As a result, the RCAF fighter pilots assigned him the call sign FAWG, which stood for “F—-d A Woman Gay.” But the call sign has already circulated on Canadian military social media forums and has been sent to this newspaper by military sexual misconduct survivors to illustrate just how toxic military culture remains.
  17. No, but the CO of the Squadron was almost at the end of his 3 year tenure as CO, so HE actually moved on about 3 months after the northern operation.
  18. Was like flying a jet engined transport. Those Allison T-56 engines were extremely versatile and dependable. It was a real fun aircraft to fly and in DND you never knew what part of the world you would be tasked to go. Story time Our C-130 Squadron in Trenton had a task to supply air support for the Feds and required us to air drop men and material to build an ice strip for C-130 operations on an ice flo. As well, our sister Squadron from Edmonton was also tasked to work with us. The bulldozers and graders were air dropped and in a few days we had a short runway we "could land" on. The big thing for us as pilots was which pilots, and what Squadron would be the first to land on the most northerly strip in Canada. Our Squadron CO in Trenton was adament that he was going to do the first flight and in doing so he would be the first C-130 pilot to land a C-130, on the most northerly air strip in Canada and our Trenton Squadron would be the first to use the strip..........................so off he went.... My flight was going up to the strip when he passed us going back to Resolute Bay, (our staging area) . We did our trip and got back to Resolute and in the main room of our quarters my FO asked the CO, what it was like to be the first C-130 pilot to land on the ice strip.....The CO was miffed and said when he crossed the button of the "runway" he saw that the Edmonton Squadron had used red paint and said they were first ...but he hastely added that he was the first pilot from OUR squadron to land the furthest north in Canada. My FO asked in what direction he landed (the runway heading slowly changed almost daily due to the ice flo drifting) . The CO said he landed on what we would call that day, RW 33. My chipper FO then said "Well then Kip is the first pilot in our Squadron to land a C-130 the furthest north in Canada as he landed on RW 15 so he was about 3000-4000 feet further north than you...... The CO briefly smiled and left the room.

After Boom signed an "engagement agreement" with Rolls-Royce for supersonic jet engines back in 2020, the latter announced last week that it had left the project. Now, other major jet engine manufacturers including Pratt & Whitney, GE Aviation, Honeywell and Safran Aircraft Engines have told FlightGlobal they're not currently interested in supersonic aircraft. Boom said that the project is still on track, though, and that it will soon announce an engine partner. "We can reconfirm our intention to announce Boom's selected engine partner and transformational approach for reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable supersonic flight, later this year." Boom told Insider. The company has 20 airplanes on order from American Airlines and 15 from United. It plans to build build a factory in California and start flying passengers by 2029. For its part, Rolls-Royce said that "after careful consideration... [we] have determined that the commercial aviation supersonic market is not currently a priority for us and, therefore, will not pursue further work on the program at this time." In addition, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently bashed supersonic travel, noting in a report that it would use 7-9 times more fuel per passenger, per kilometer, than subsonic jets. Boom has said that it would offset its carbon output through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). However, the ICAO report said that would be a poor use of scarce SAF fuels, given the high fuel burn compared to a regular jet. It also noted that "the high cruise altitude of supersonics increases the residence time of emissions significantly."
  20. So in October of 2020 Delta cancelled my booked flights and gave me a credit voucher for the exact funds I paid for flight(s) that were cancelled . Today, with the voucher, I rebooked the exact same flights and my vocher was applied, and I still ended up with a bill in excess of $300.00 CDN Now I know how those pilots are getting that pay increase .......

Re the RRIF...couldn't agree more but when they came out, we all rushed to them as a tax shelter ( mid 1970s) but alas, not so much but in the meantime we did find a great money manager so it worked out . At one point we were up 17% on some of his investments. As we aged he moved us from HIGH RISK to a lower risk factor...No regrets,
  22. For the first time ever, Porter will offer flights from Toronto to Vancouver — the longest route the airline has offered in its 16-year history. The route has been made possible because of the airline's recent acquisition of 50 Embraer E195-E2 jets. Flights are slated to begin in February and round-trip fares will start at $248, the airline said in a statement. Rich, Nice work and I would take the $80,000.00 because, through my, (our), planning, at age 60, all the kids (3), are gone, I have absolutely no debt...not a cent, and my money manager is pretty good because my RIF has made an average of 12% since I started investing. The biggest factor in my life is that I never really made big $$$$ during 28 years in Mil and 15 years in the Airline Industry and we never did live on the high side... my kids, grandkids, as well as health and happiness are more important than a 6 figure pension.........and......that light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter every year
