  1. Was like flying a jet engined transport. Those Allison T-56 engines were extremely versatile and dependable. It was a real fun aircraft to fly and in DND you never knew what part of the world you would be tasked to go. Story time Our C-130 Squadron in Trenton had a task to supply air support for the Feds and required us to air drop men and material to build an ice strip for C-130 operations on an ice flo. As well, our sister Squadron from Edmonton was also tasked to work with us. The bulldozers and graders were air dropped and in a few days we had a short runway we "could land" on. The big thing for us as pilots was which pilots, and what Squadron would be the first to land on the most northerly strip in Canada. Our Squadron CO in Trenton was adament that he was going to do the first flight and in doing so he would be the first C-130 pilot to land a C-130, on the most northerly air strip in Canada and our Trenton Squadron would be the first to use the strip..........................so off he went.... My flight was going up to the strip when he passed us going back to Resolute Bay, (our staging area) . We did our trip and got back to Resolute and in the main room of our quarters my FO asked the CO, what it was like to be the first C-130 pilot to land on the ice strip.....The CO was miffed and said when he crossed the button of the "runway" he saw that the Edmonton Squadron had used red paint and said they were first ...but he hastely added that he was the first pilot from OUR squadron to land the furthest north in Canada. My FO asked in what direction he landed (the runway heading slowly changed almost daily due to the ice flo drifting) . The CO said he landed on what we would call that day, RW 33. My chipper FO then said "Well then Kip is the first pilot in our Squadron to land a C-130 the furthest north in Canada as he landed on RW 15 so he was about 3000-4000 feet further north than you...... The CO briefly smiled and left the room.
  2. Boom's supersonic jet is facing a lack of interest from engine suppliers Manufacturers say supersonic travel is 'tangential' and are focusing on efficiency instead. Boom Supersonic Steve Dent|@stevetdent|September 19, 2022 5:36 AM Boom recently lost its jet engine partner for the Overture supersonic jet, and other major engine manufacturers aren't interested in the project either, Insider has reported. After Boom signed an "engagement agreement" with Rolls-Royce for supersonic jet engines back in 2020, the latter announced last week that it had left the project. Now, other major jet engine manufacturers including Pratt & Whitney, GE Aviation, Honeywell and Safran Aircraft Engines have told FlightGlobal they're not currently interested in supersonic aircraft. Boom said that the project is still on track, though, and that it will soon announce an engine partner. "We can reconfirm our intention to announce Boom's selected engine partner and transformational approach for reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable supersonic flight, later this year." Boom told Insider. The company has 20 airplanes on order from American Airlines and 15 from United. It plans to build build a factory in California and start flying passengers by 2029. For its part, Rolls-Royce said that "after careful consideration... [we] have determined that the commercial aviation supersonic market is not currently a priority for us and, therefore, will not pursue further work on the program at this time." After careful consideration, Rolls-Royce has determined that the commercial aviation supersonic market is not currently a priority for us and, therefore, will not pursue further work on the program at this time. There are a limited number of other manufacturers capable of developing a supersonic jet engine, and all of the biggest ones said that it's not in their plans. Honeywell, Safron and GE shut down the idea, while Pratt & Whitney stated that supersonic travel is "tangential" to its business. Pratt & Whitney cited efficiency as an issue for supersonic jets, and other manufacturers said they're focused on reducing fuel-burn. That's the primary direction for the industry right now, given criticism of air travel's contribution to global warming. In addition, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently bashed supersonic travel, noting in a report that it would use 7-9 times more fuel per passenger, per kilometer, than subsonic jets. Boom has said that it would offset its carbon output through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). However, the ICAO report said that would be a poor use of scarce SAF fuels, given the high fuel burn compared to a regular jet. It also noted that "the high cruise altitude of supersonics increases the residence time of emissions significantly."
  3. So in October of 2020 Delta cancelled my booked flights and gave me a credit voucher for the exact funds I paid for flight(s) that were cancelled . Today, with the voucher, I rebooked the exact same flights and my vocher was applied, and I still ended up with a bill in excess of $300.00 CDN Now I know how those pilots are getting that pay increase .......
  4. Re the RRIF...couldn't agree more but when they came out, we all rushed to them as a tax shelter ( mid 1970s) but alas, not so much but in the meantime we did find a great money manager so it worked out . At one point we were up 17% on some of his investments. As we aged he moved us from HIGH RISK to a lower risk factor...No regrets,
  5. For the first time ever, Porter will offer flights from Toronto to Vancouver — the longest route the airline has offered in its 16-year history. The route has been made possible because of the airline's recent acquisition of 50 Embraer E195-E2 jets. Flights are slated to begin in February and round-trip fares will start at $248, the airline said in a statement. Nothing in there about fees and taxes...or seat price The flights out of Pearson to Ottawa and Montreal will start at $225, with all fees and taxes included, the airline said. Everything included here...but...is that round trip or one way, and does that include a seat????? =============================================================================== (((( Hard to believe that you can get a round trip flight YYZ-YVR-YYZ for $23.00 more than a trip to YOW/YUL ))) CAN'T CHECK FARES AS WEBSITE NOT ACTIVE FOR E195 FLIGHTS
  6. Rich, Nice work and I would take the $80,000.00 because, through my, (our), planning, at age 60, all the kids (3), are gone, I have absolutely no debt...not a cent, and my money manager is pretty good because my RIF has made an average of 12% since I started investing. The biggest factor in my life is that I never really made big $$$$ during 28 years in Mil and 15 years in the Airline Industry and we never did live on the high side... my kids, grandkids, as well as health and happiness are more important than a 6 figure pension.........and......that light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter every year
  7. Little more complicated than that. Delta pilots had the option of a lump sum payment which would reduce their actual monthly pension payments and leave a monthly pension cheque the retiree felt was comfortable and would still be able to invest that lump sum. A pilot with 37 years in could take about 1.2 million out and his pension would then be about $2500.00 a month, ($30,000.00/yr) . When Delta went into bankruptcy his pension almost went to zero but he still had 1.2 million "somewhere". Perhaps the fellow in question did not take a lump sum and, yes, his pension would be cut by about 55-65% , Initially Delta stated that full term pilots would never see less than $75.000.00 annual pension but once the numbers were crunched that never happened, Based on the fact that that individual went to $40,000.00 would indicate that he did not take a lump sum and reduce his monthly income cheque and was, thus, a victim of the severe cuts to his total monthly pension cheques.. That "lump sum" upon retirement would be an interesting scenario, had it been available up here.
  8. Obviously I am not aware of all the circumstances of this fellow's life but if at age 60, in 2004, this fellow couldn't manage on just Delta's $40,000.00, I would say he pretty much failed to PLAN his retirement and was living from payday-to payday. Surely he would have had an investment plan as a safety net, but then again, perhaps he was faced with alimony for a couple of sources....who knows? Everybody approaches retirement with a different attitude but one should, at least, be wary of the volatility of any company pension plan and ensure they will always have another source of income, albeit less, should their company pension plan evaporate.
  9. What a great SAR tool !!! The Police will probably get them as well, have trained personnel to operate them and rescue persons in very difficult locations, such as car over "the edge" etc..
  10. Delta, pilots reach labor deal with 34% pay hike https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/05/business/delta-pilots-labor-deal/index.html ((EXCERPTS)) If the deal is approved by Delta (DAL) pilots, it is widely expected to act as a benchmark for contract negotiations at rivals United Airlines (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL). Delta pilots will get a raise of at least 18% on the date the contract is signed, another 5% after one year, 4% after two years and 4% after three years, according to a draft contract seen by Reuters. They will also get a one-time payment equivalent to a cumulative 22% of their earnings between 2020 and 2022 after the deal is ratified.
  11. Be more of a morale booster for cabin crew if the FO took the left seat and a FA took the right seat and was given a few tasks plus FO pay for the remainder of the flight.
  12. I watched this one last night.......oooooooh what a wild ride.....
  13. Delta.......If mid Atlantic and the Captain Ramjet decides to take a "dirt nap", and becomes cargo, does the FO automatically move up the Captain's pay until the aircraft lands ? Wonder if that is in the contract ?
  14. See....Those "Flat Earth" people were pretty close to the truth.......the earth is almost FLAT but not entirely, as the bottom is elliptical .

  16. Is this fly high and then dive in ? Yes, According to YYZ ATC...the new A320 SOP will have the A320 at specific fixes approximately 30 miles outside of YYZ at an assigned altitude of between FL200 and FL250, (depending on wind) . At that point both engines will be shut down, the RAT extended and a dead stick landing will be initiated using GPS as well as ex RCAF GCA controllers when the weather is not condusive to VFR arrivals. Ammendments forth coming in the near future.for other aircraft types Althought this procedure may seem onerous for the pilots, it will alleviate all the noise concerns from the population who constructed their homes AFTER the airport was built.

  18. OK Thanks for the clarification, however, I do differ with anyone who advocates being able to erase a CVR but I do so with a caveat. If I were King, "CVR audio may only be used by authorized incident/accident investigators and will not be made available to any, and all, non-authorized persons, or groups of persons. Unauthorized personnel obtaining any CVR audio will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law with minimum fines of $1,000,000.00 in addition to 15 years in prison". Well, you know what I just wrote will never see the light of day, however I still beieve that CVRs should never be erased by flight crews. They should, however, be only available to Incident / Accident Investigators. Flight crew who erase the CVR after a successful flight, in my opinion, suffer from a slight case of paranoia.
  19. Well the complaintant might have been the pilot who was nicknamed by other pilots ,(sexually explicit nickname), or it could have been a controller who thought the name was not suitable for TX and RX.
  20. Officially, from DND or the RCAF, I don't think you will ever hear them ....unless someone, who wishes to be anonymous , wants to put them out there.
  21. I'm sorry, I don't follow you.... are you advocating that we, pilots, want to have the ability to erase a CVR. . If not, who is erasing the CVRs.....?.......as far as I know pilots can not erase the CVR. If the erase function of a CVR is disabled how to we lose the most important tool of an accident investigation?? As you can tel...I'm a little confused

  23. Yesterday, my oldest grandaughter, ( age 16) played a good game of hockey and as per usual we waited until she changed, met her in hallway, and started to walk toward her Father's car.. She seemed pretty quiet so I just asked her.. "How's it going?" She replied, "Oh pretty good but I have to tell you sometrhing I have not yet told my Mom and Dad or my sister" "What do you want to tell me?' ., I asked She said , "Grandpa, I'm transgender " "Oh my....and how did this come about?", I gently asked Well, she said, "I used to be invisible, but now I'm Transparent. " Haha...Gotcha Grandpa
