Guest V1
I wonder if any one out there could advise me. I am getting a message on my computer every few minutes that displays in a window called "messenger service" and it tells me that I can stop messenger pop ups in miuntes by going to a site called www.endads.com and that I should press the OK button below. And why should I subscribe to endads when it is them that is sending the popup in the first place. I hesitate to press OK, I imagine that it is a button that may do much more than just ACK the message. I imagine that cloaked in that button is probably an button that will install some other crap. It seems to be coming from MSN messenger that my kids use but even when MSN is closed I still get it. any advice to get rid of this?
wizard
Hi V1 if I were you I would buy Ad-aware it blocks ads and you can use it to scan your pc for spyware and if it finds this spyware you can clean it out of your pc with Ad-aware.
Guest JakeYYZ
You can download an adware scanner utility called adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/. This is a free program that will scan and remove most adware from your system. Another good program to run is Spybot (search for it on Google or Yahoo to find a download site). It works like Adaware, but one program sometimes picks up things the other has missed. Pay attention to the removal instructions. Hope that helps. Mitch Cronin
try Adaware combined with Spybot Search and Destroy (a google search for each will lead you straight there)
Guest Demon72
Had the same problem. If your computer is a stand alone and not part of a network you can turn off the part of messenger that these pop-ups are using. To quote Symantec " these advertisements are sent via Messenger Service designed for use by system administrators in Windows server client networks." To disable (these instructions are for Windows 2000) 1. Click 'Start' button 2. Right click 'My Computer' 3. Choose 'Manage' from Menu 4. Left column highlight 'Services and Applications' 5. Right colum double click on 'Services' 6. Double click on service called 'Messenger' 7. Click 'Stop' butoon to stop service 8. Change the 'Startup Type' to 'Manual' 9. Click 'Apply' 10. Click 'OK' 11. Close 'Computer Management' That stopped the popups on our computer for good. Good luck!

Guest rphydro
As Demon suggests, these popups are separate from the MSN Messenger chat service. For versions other then win 2000, to disable 'messenger' use this link: http://www.auburn.edu/oit/security/messengerService.html

Guest V1
Glad I asked that was the fix i needed tks How about another question. When I look at the "Windows Task Manager" (ctrl alt del) in the processes tab I see a couple of dozen items in the list. Some like Explorer.exe seems normal but I wonder about others. How does one manage the processes in that list? ( know which ones should and which one should not be there and permanently get rid of the bad ones.) I suspect that they are the demons that slow my start up and other ops. I see that you can highlight them and select END PROCESS but I dont know which ones to end and when I guess and end some of them they come back next time I start upanyway. Cargo Agent
Here's a link to a site that helps explain all those weird programs in the task list. http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm It will give you an idea which are essential and which to get rid of. If one is not on the list, copy the name down and do a "google" search. This has worked for me in the past to identify spyware. To stop those unwanted programs from starting up, use a Start Up Manager of some kind. The one I use is found here http://www.rayslab.com/?from=Programs&product=ASUM Some freeware ones can be found here http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/system/fwstartup.shtml Good Luck CA
Jaydee
Here is another way to control unwanted start up items.......... go to start run type in...msconfig on " start up " tab......unclick any unwanted programs and then re boot your computer. If you unclick something you actually want running.....just repeat the process and add it back again
