GTAA Announces Changes to Aeronautical Rates and Charges and Airport Improvement Fee at Toronto Pearson

Adjustments will generate revenue for the operation of Toronto Pearson, including increasing passenger services and investments in infrastructure and restoration projects that drive a better passenger experience

TORONTO, Sept. 28, 2022 /CNW/ – The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) will increase the aeronautical rates and the airport improvement fee (AIF) on January 1, 2023. These increases are a result of the high inflationary environment and ongoing impacts from COVID-19. The adjustment to the AIF will put Toronto Pearson in line with the current rates charged by other airports across Canada.

Effective January 1, 2023, aeronautical rates for commercial aviation, business aircraft and general aviation aircraft will increase by 4 per cent. The AIF for departing passengers will increase by $5; whereas the fees charged for connecting passengers will increase by $1.

The impacts of the pandemic both on the global air travel industry and on Pearson have been significant, with the airport having added significant debt to its balance sheet to remain operational over the last two years.

The revenue generated will support the operation of Toronto Pearson, including:

  • The installation of new inbound baggage carrousels, including the upgrade of 29,000 metres of baggage handling conveyor belts and a new robotic baggage storage and retrieval system in Terminal 3;
  • More cleaning and passenger service providers to respond to rising demand for air travel;
  • Renovations to airport amenities across both terminals, including a refresh of washrooms and customs clearance areas;
  • A major restoration of roofing in Terminal 3;
  • Refurbishing escalators and moving walkways while augmenting systems with advanced technologies, such as a pilot of autonomous vehicles;
  • Doubling the investment in the annual airport asset restoration program;
  • Increasing staff for maintenance and administration activities.

“Airport operations have improved significantly since the summer, but Toronto Pearson is still feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a not-for-profit entity, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that we have sufficient revenues to maintain and invest in a world-class facility to provide our valued passengers with an experience that is appropriate for Canada’s largest airport,” says Deborah Flint, President and CEO, GTAA.

Looks like the GTAA is getting a little sensitive to the negative press, seeing it used to boast it was “a world class airport” and now ranks as one of the worst.
So to control the message, media will have to fill out a request and have it approved 24 hours before they try to do a story in or anywhere on airport property…and I thought this was a public facility owned by the people of Canada…yes, the AA operates it but they rent it from the Government of Canada, ergo the people:

Starting Monday, October 3, a request form located on our website will need to be filled out 24 hours before sending crews to the airport, whether reporting from inside a terminal or outside on the curbs, lands, and roadways that make up Toronto Pearson. It’s an automated form, so it shouldn’t take much more effort than our email process from before. But it will give us the info we need to approve or deny requests

Freedom of the press is at the core of our democracy and is a commitment for our Government,” a spokesperson from Transport Canada told the Sun. “Pearson Airport’s new media policy is unacceptable, and our office will be reaching out directly to the Airport to express this concern.”

Unbelievable…..and the airport authority would like some positive coverage, whenever that happens….piss off the people that do your advertising!

If the media was smart what they'd do is file a request to film everywhere on the airport every day at 8:00 AM - get approved and be ready to spring into action any time they want.  Just assign the most junior staffer to complete the automated form to request access for the next day.

But the authority doesn’t  have to approve the request…..so they can control the coverage at their whim and decide which outlets are “friendly”. From the article:
