New album: An Introduction to Syd Barrett

Syd Barrett (Capitol/EMI)

As far as tormented, drug-addled musical geniuses go, few were as fleeting as original Pink Floyd leading man Syd Barrett. This Introduction, supervised by longtime friend (and eventual replacement) David Gilmour, showcases the late ’60s hero’s rise and fall in all its pathos and includes 18 key remastered and remixed tracks from Barrett’s output, including the weirdness of early singles like Arnold Layne, lesser-known cuts from Floyd debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and the psych folk, pop and blues of 1970 solo efforts The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. The only missing piece in this complex, kaleidoscopic puzzle? Barrett’s ramshackle farewell Jugband Blues (from Pink Floyd’s A Saucerful of Secrets), which signalled the end of his tenure as the band’s frontman in 1968 and would have made for a perfect closer to the collection.
