LH at YYC - D gates

Can someone explain why LH operates out of D at YYC?

Getting off an AC flight today with cnx pax, much energy was spent trying to explain how to get all the way over there.

And there is no lounge for *A over there either?

Probably has to due with gate availability as the A wing is apparently pretty tight and it sounds like AC didn't expend much energy to welcome LH to YYC either.

They received a warmer welcome and more support from WJ!

LH has to go to D side as AC has a large domestic departure bank at noon. At the same time there a significant amount of tborder departures around the same time.

If operations run perfectly, LH could work from B/C pier, however take a few departure delays and 1 early arrival and aircraft will arrive without an available gate.

Additionally, for LH to operate into B pier, they would require gate 23 at a minimum. This would put gates 20-22 as domestic gates and exclude the east side of b/c concourse from transborder operations. This would leave 8 gates for noon tborder departures (26-34) with no expansion possibilities.

The D concourse has the only available gates in YYC (because the YYCAA overbuilt D for their friends at WS), and thats where LH went along with widebody charters, KLM, and BA.

LH and AC have a 50/50 partnership on all things Canada to Germany. If LH is sucessful AC gets 1/2 the profits. AC is committed to the LH@YYC operation and warmly welcomed them.

From an ACGHS perspective, they were understaffed as is and so ther ground handling contract went elsewhere. LH handles their own counter throughout Canada and around the world, so AC would never get this work.

Thank goodness Toronto didn't do the same.....

I thought the D wing was originally planned / designed for CP? As I understand it, AC had the opportunity to move in first, but declined?
