ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Delta Air Lines planned to cancel about 200 flights into and out of Atlanta late Wednesday and early Thursday as freezing rain and sleet were forecast for Georgia, a Delta spokeswoman said.

The airline is attempting to mitigate flight delays for travelers, said Betsy Talton. By canceling the flights late Wednesday, she said, Delta reduces the number of Atlanta flights that will require deicing.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday afternoon upgraded a winter storm watch to a winter storm warning that included the northern half of the Atlanta metro area. The warning was is in effect from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

"A mixture of rain, sleet and freezing rain are expected across much of north Georgia late tonight into Thursday," the National Weather Service said. Ice accumulations of up to a quarter of an inch were expected, and up to 2 inches of snow could fall in the mountains north of Atlanta.

The precipitation will change to all rain by Thursday afternoon, forecasters said.

"A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring and will cause hazardous driving conditions. Travel should be avoided."

The last time Atlanta experienced winter weather, average deicing delays at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were about 30 minutes.

Delta reservations was contacting customers on the canceled flights, Talton said, and they were being rebooked for earlier Wednesday or later Thursday afternoon.

So Atlanta has an ice storm and the average de-icing wait is 30 minutes?

Obviously that was one airport the GTAA never visited before its $4 billion expansion.
