Guest DashTrash
There's a lot of people breakin' rocks in Cuba right now......I can think of better places to vacation than in a Gulag... Seven Cuban dissidents were convicted on Monday on charges of trying to undermine the government of president Fidel Castro, and given sentences of between 15 and 25 years. Another 71 dissidents are to be tried on similar charges in the most severe political crack down in many years on the Caribbean island. The roundup of the dissidents, which started three weeks ago, is expected to set back attempts by a group of legislators in Washington to have the Bush administration relax a 40 year old economic embargo on the island. Dissident groups on Monday attacked the sentences, but were apparently relived that none of those convicted was given the life sentence that could have been imposed under Cuban law. Those sentenced include Hector Palacios, leader of a nascent political party, Ricardo Gonzalez, editor of an opposition magazine, and Raul Rivero, one of the country's leading writers. AND On Wednesday, human rights activist Elizardo Sánchez, one of the few who remains free, called the arrests ``the most intense wave of repression in the history of Cuba. Rarely has Latin America seen so many people accused for crimes of opinion.'' 1. Pérez Roque denied that the crackdown was timed to coincide with the world's preoccupation with the war on Iraq, or was somehow related to a recent string of hijackings carried out over the past three weeks, including two planes that made it to Florida and a ferry boat that was towed back to Cuba. All of the government opponents -- including just one woman -- were prosecuted on state security charges in trials that were closed to international reporters and foreign diplomats. Maverick
That may be true, however our freedom loving neighbours to the south detain the same types of people on a routine basis without charging them. In my world it's a coin toss as to which is worse.
