UPDATE 2-United mechanics vote to join AMFA union

Mon July 14, 2003 04:35 PM ET

(Adds remarks from unions, United, analysts, byline)

By David Bailey

CHICAGO, July 14 (Reuters) - Mechanics at bankrupt United Airlines voted to drop the International Association of Machinists union, choosing to join the smaller rival Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, AMFA said on Monday.

AMFA has courted mechanics at United for years and will more than double its membership by adding the 13,000-plus mechanics and other workers from United.

Mechanics have been among the most militant workers at United and that may not change under AMFA, which said in a recent message to mechanic members at Northwest Airlines that recent cuts negotiated at United and American Airlines were a disgrace to labor and the well being of their membership.

The AMFA victory came as no surprise, said Ray Neidl, airline analyst at Blaylock & Partners.

let's hope the membership does something now to get rid of the IAM here like supporting CAMA.
