When you cross the line, take the "Chuckanut Drive" to Laconner. Spend a couple of hours ( at least) there, you'll love it. Then back to the I-5 south until Longview on the Oregon border. Then highway 30 out to Astoria on the coast and down the 101 all the way to the Golden Gate bridge. There will be an interesting place to stop every hour or so. The 101 is the best if the weather is fine and if it socks in just head inland a bit and you'll find the sun again.

Don't forget to stop in Sausalito before the Golden Gate ( great little spot!) and have a great trip... ;-)

While you're in San Jose, a little side trip down to Carmel and Monterey is well worth the effort...

Before you cross the bridge at Astoria, there's a little spit of land in the SW corner of Washington State, worth visiting esp if you like oysters. Definitely stay on the coast thru Oregon, stop in at Lincoln City, Cannon Beach & Seaside. There's a good warbird museum at Olympia WA, another at Tillamook, OR (can't miss it, look for the WWII blimp hangar on the E side of the highway with Air Museum on it). Further south is Dunes (forgot the proper name) and Pistol River, somewhat unknown windsurf spot if you do that.

If you like looking at aircraft museums and don't mind a side trip inland, head to McMinnville, OR (about 1 hour SW of Portland but easy to get to from the coast) to the Evergreen Aviation Musuem.

A great place and it has the Spruce Goose as it's star attraction.

Did the trip down Hwy #101 from Vancouver last fall and got as far as Florence where you can rent small dune buggies to play in the sand.

It's a fantastic drive. Enjoy!
