A 10-year-old girl is dead after she suffered a medical issue on board an Air Canada flight destined to London from Toronto on Saturday.

The flight departed from Pearson International Airport at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, and was later diverted to Shannon Airport in Ireland due to the situation.

According to Air Canada, one doctor and a nurse were on board the flight to assist, as well as a ground-based medical support network.

The girl was pronounced dead by local emergency crews in Ireland.

“We are deeply saddened by this situation and we are doing all we can to assist the family in these tragic circumstances,” said Air Canada representative Peter Fitzpatrick.

The Boeing 787 flight had 230 passengers on board, and has since landed at its final destination of London Heathrow Airport.

The Irish Sun reported that the coroner’s office has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Neither Air Canada nor the Canadian government could immediately confirm further details.
