Kip Powick
THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL–Montreal hockey great Guy Lafleur is suing Montreal police and Quebec's solicitor general for a total of $3.5 million. His lawyer, Jean-Pierre Rancourt, says he and his client don't think the Crown should have issued an arrest warrant for Lafleur on Jan. 25. Rancourt claims the warrant has caused irreparable damage to Lafleur's reputation and that it makes the hockey legend look like a wanted man. Lafleur was accused of giving contradictory testimony at his son's bail hearing last year. Lafleur testified at the hearing in October that his son was respecting a court-ordered curfew while in his parents' custody. But the Hall of Famer later admitted he drove his son to hotels to spend the night with his 16-year-old girlfriend.
GDR
Hi Kip I agree with you that Lafleur suing in this situation borders on ludicrous, but it is a strictly 100% Canadian story and I don't see why it was necessary to take a shot at our friends to the south in your title. deicer
Mornin' Greg I think Kip's reference is to the fact that he is suing. Until now, this act of retribution has predominantly an American activity. Could this lawsuit be in the vein of trying to bulk up an ailing financial situation rather than trying to right a wrong, especially in the light that Lafleur was implicated? GDR
I understand that Kip and I agree that this type of thing happens more often in the US than it does here, but this is a Canadian story and I just don't see that title as necessary. However, I do get your point and I also hope that we don't go as far down that litigious road they have in the US. Cheers Greg
