This is too weird

1. Key in the first 3 digit of your phone number into the calculator.

2. Multiply by 80.

3. Add 1.

4. Multiply by 250.

5. Plus last 4 digit of your phone number.

6. Plus last 4 digit of your phone number again.

7. Minus 250.

8. Divide by 2 at last.

Is this your handy phone number??? Weird huh?

Can someone figure out and explain how the arithmetic works.

Hi, John - Your phone number can be divided into 2 parts:

  • The 1st 3 digits x 10K (for instance 5550000)
  • The last 4 digits (say 1212?)
This little arithmetic sleight of hand doubles your phone number, adding 250; that's the bit about multiplying those 1st 3 digits by 80, then adding 1 and multiplying by 250, instead of just multiplying by 20K in the first place. The 250 is just for confusion.

You're then instructed to add the last 4 digits twice.

After that, you subtract the extra 250 and divide by 2 - presto back to the original number. It's just a case of BS baffles brains.
