Guest CarryOn
CanWest Global Communications Corp. WINNIPEG, Oct. 7 /CNW/ - CanWest Global Communications Corp and the family of I .H. Asper O.C. O.M. Q.C. are sad to announce the passing this morning of Israel Asper, Founder and Chairman of CanWest. Mr. Asper was admitted to St. Boniface Hospital Winnipeg at approximately 9.30 am this morning and he passed away shortly after in the presence of his immediate family, wife Babs Asper, sons David and Leonard and daughter Gail. Mr. Asper retired from his position of Executive Chairman of CanWest in January 2003, to devote more of his time to his many philanthropic pursuits, including in particular the establishment in Winnipeg of the Canadian Human Rights Museum. Mr. Asper remained active in the company as Chairman of the Board. In anticipation of Mr. Asper's retirement, the Company initiated an orderly transition of management with the appointment in 1999 of Leonard Asper as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Asper's successor as Chairman will be addressed by the Board in due course. The company feels a sense of profound loss on the passing of our founder, who distinguished himself as a visionary business leader, a caring leader in his encouragement and financial support of worthy causes, and as a champion of Israel. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
Guest JakeYYZ
I decided to watch Global at 5:30p.m., to see just how sycophantic they would be. It was beyond my worst imaginings. A veritable pukefest. They took up the entire first fifteen minutes of the broadcast with the most appalling arse-licking bombast, then had the nerve to return to the "story" after fifteen minutes more of real news. Pass the sick-bag, Don.

Guest JakeYYZ
And for such a thing to happen the day after Yom Kippur. It was the Palstinians wut done it, I tells ya. Meanwhile, in news about people who aren't dead yet, the Pope is out touring again this week. And where did he go today? Friggin Pompeii !!! It's a miracle I tells ya. JP2 rocks! (Well, at least he shakes, rattles and drools.) I'm awaiting the next ravings of Rebecca Eckler.
Don Hudson
The Canwest media empire will survive its founder because our public legislators have never had the courage or vision to ensure a truly independant press despite all the studies, white papers and Royal Commissions. Izzy Asper once said his organization is selling a product in much the same way one sells soap. Well, what a sad way to view a sacred trust. Asper used his empire as a platform for his personal views. That may be acceptable for one or two newspapers or television stations when the public has a choice, but here in the west, the choice is the Toronto Globe and Mail or a Canwest publication, with well-known restrictions on editorial freedom, enforced by firings. One never revels in the death of another or dances on graves...its very bad form for we're all equal at the end, but that does not stop one from criticizing what ought to be criticized and that is the absence of a truly free and broadly independant press in Canada. This may be viewed as Asper's success, and as a business story it undoubtedly is, but it is primarily a failure of public policy from that institution which has increasingly become the shadow cast by big business: Our government.
