I believe this is permissable under the CDL (configuration deviation list) with a minor performance penalty, You'd be suprised at how many panels doors etc... that can be missing from an aircraft and still be serviceable :)

The photographer was in the right place at the right time that is for sure, he sure had no problem getting that pic posted to airliners.net.

This isn't the first time that one of the 400's has been operating without a wingtip.

If I remember correctly, a couple years ago one operated for a couple months without a tip after it was scrubbed off while being towed into the hangar in YYZ.

I believe the -400 adds 3% fuel penalty for a missing winglet(CDL), and the 340, with the center gear locked up, gets a reduced max take off weight, equal to that of a 330.
