Moon The Loon
It was one of Skunkworks most successful and well kept secrets in the sixties and seventies. I remember seeing it at Abbotsford in '96 when it was still operational - lots of soldiers with authority to use deadly force if anyone got within touching distance. There is a really good paperback written by a former squadron commander (can't remember his name). He flew the 71 for 20 odd years and his book recounts a lot of what was involved in flying the bird. The book came out around 1999. I was amazed how quickly the 71 went from highly classified to anyone can know about it. With its forced retirement, the US lost its only reliable realtime battle damage assessment tool in favour of RPV's which are only in developmental stages. Great link BTW. Thanks! If you get to Boeing field museum, there's a cockpit section of the slightly smaller (what's it called - YK20??) you can climb into and make airplane noises!
