United B747-400 springs a leak

Recommended Posts

I had a similar experience as a passenger on a NW DC9 leaving MSP many years ago. As soon as the aircraft got airborne, it started venting fuel. I called an FA and showed her what was happening.

I ended up drawing a picture on a barf bag to take to the flight deck because the FA couldn´t quite see what I was pointing to. We flew around MSP for 30 minutes and finally landed again because they had lost so much fuel they could not continue.

On the way out the door, the CA told me a transfer pump wouldn´t turn off and was moving fuel from left to right wing tanks with the right wing already full. By the time they had figured out what was happening, they were short on fuel.

Four hours later, the replacement DC9 broke its nosewheel steering during the power back from the gate.

One of those days.......
