The file extension “XLS” denotes a file created in Microsoft Excel.

If you don’t have Excel, you can open it in Word. However, it won’t be

properly formatted.

An .xls file is a Spreadsheet file saved/created by "Microsoft Excel" a component of Microsoft Office.

Usually to 'open' xls files requires Excel.

Having said that it is often possible to open some with Microsoft Works or Word and with Quattro Pro. Using other than Excel may cause you to lose some or all of the formatting information but the data may still be usable.

Pager and Jake are both right, this is a file type native to Microsoft Excel. You should be able to import at least part of the file into MS Word, and many other spreadsheet programs can translate the file type as well.

For full editing access you really do need MS Excel itself, however if you just want to view the contents MS offers a free Excel viewer for download.
