Actually, the USA was a firm supporter of Saddam when Saddam gassed the Kurds and when he killed most of the other people he killed.  The Americans said nothing about Saddam's brutaility at the time, but then almost 20 years later used it as an excuse to start a war as a result of which far more people have died (upwards of 100,000 Iraqi civilians according to recent estimates) than would have died without Bush's war.

All good points. At that time the aggressive state in the Middle East preparing for nuclear arming and territorial expansion was Iran. America has been trying to stabilize the ME for decades to the benefit of the rest of the world. Saddam at that time appeared to be the best

strategic way of controlling the Ayotolla with the least collateral damage. Unfortunately Saddam did not work out as advertised and he eventually replaced the Iranian threat with his own Iraqi threat. Trying to instill democracy in the ME is and will continue to be a very difficult project.
