Arctic Ace
The federal government is interested in maintaining a viable transportation system in the country - period. It would be a Canadian transportation nightmare if Air Canada were to suddenly shut down tomorrow as the other carriers are not prepared to to fill the void - yet. Therefore, the only option would be the one which some in Ottawa have already been pushing for - cabatoge. Not a good option. The best option would be federal assistance to keep Air Canada afloat. This should be done with similar rules as the Northern Ontario Transportation Commission (NorOntair) worked under. They provided service where necessary. Once another airline demonstrated the ability and desire to serve the route, then NorOntair could no longer compete on that route. This is only fair to the viable carriers that presently exist. The federal government should only be allowed to step in to maintain the transportation system and tax payer money should not be used to quash or limit in any way the stability or growth of any airline. Be back shortly. Gone to change into fire retardant gear.
