Government Assistance(?) To Air Canada

It appears that the Government of Canada will consider involvement in Air Canada's sticky financial situation. Employees should keep recent history in mind. Employees should also think about working for Mr. David Collenette, the Minister of Transport. He's the guy that will call the shots if they bail us out. Are those the hands you'd like to put your future in?

Or perhaps you'd like to work for Mr. Gerald Schwartz? As you'll recall, the government was prepared to change laws to facilitate Mr. Schwartz's hostile takeover of the Air Canada enterprise a few years ago. Mr. Schwartz has close ties to the Liberal party, and would seem a likely candidate to run the show. His business M.O. is carving up enterprises and selling off the pieces. I'm sure he'd go at the job with vigor!

Are these the kinds of possibilities that you're prepared to accept? Or would you rather negotiate with our employer and have a chance at determining your own future?

Remember, no one is holding a gun at our unions' heads and saying, "You cannot discuss alternatives with management."

Hopefully the Gov't will take the advice so far given from the commitee and take an even handed approach. If the Gov't reduces taxes to all carriers it will benefit everyone including the air traveller. More travellers means more money for the carriers. This is also good as it will give more time for AC figure out its fiancial problems (which it'll never do) and limp along for a while longer so other carriers can increase their market share and make Canadians less dependant on AC. When AC does eventually go into bankruptcy, CCCA, or whatever the impact will be smaller and then the Gov't won't fell the need to throw away taxpayer money.

Never happen in a million years. As for AC being 'forced' to buy Canadian that's ridiculous. RM had wanted CDN out of his way for a long time, the Gov't baited the trap and they knew him well enough they knew that he would take it. He still had a choice to say no.
