Guest DaveCarter
Editorial: Miller twisting facts David Miller has worked hard over the last nine months to set himself up as a Toronto mayoral candidate of integrity who is "for a clean city." It's a strategy that has vaulted him into second place in the race behind Barbara Hall, the latest poll indicates. But Miller is running ahead in another category; that of using the most misleading campaign ad. Miller's questionable newspaper ad focuses on the Toronto Island Airport, which he, alone, among the top four candidates opposes. The ad is a doctored photo showing 30 huge commercial airlines flying in formation at treetop level over the harbour, with the CN Tower and the SkyDome in the background. It reads: "With the prospect of thousands of planes using the Island Airport once it's expanded, you can expect a lot of things to end up in the drink. Namely, de-icing chemicals, excess fuel, cleaning solutions and solvents." As an advertisement, it is striking. But it is far from truthful. In fact, no one is talking about "thousands" of planes, either a day or a week. And no one is talking of huge jets. Miller is entitled to his views on the island airport, but Toronto voters deserve better from our possible next mayor than the distortions they get in this advertisement. Guest Crow
Or how about his radio ad with the announcer having to yell at the top of his lungs to be heard over the roar of the jet engines. I guess he wasn't present at the airshow when Jazz flew their RJ nice and close to show how quiet it is. I agree with you; if he is using dishonest tactics like that, then how does that reflect on his character. Would Torontonians really want that for a mayor?
