Guest Operation Bomberclad
YTZ EXPANSION A POLITICAL FOOTBALL Bridge flip-flop may cost millions KERRY GILLESPIE CITY HALL BUREAU Most Toronto voters say they oppose building a bridge to the island airport. But trying to get out of the deal could cost taxpayers more than $130 million. The city signed a deal to build a bridge from the foot of Bathurst St. to the City Centre Airport and expand commercial turboprop flights from the nine a day that fly now to 110. Mayoral candidate Councillor David Miller has made opposition to airport expansion and the bridge the centrepiece of his campaign. If elected, he says, he'll kill the deal. The airport operator says that would leave the city open to a lawsuit over lost revenue. "If you breach a contract and go back on your word, you have to pay damages. It's not a simple, `Oh, we changed our minds,'" said Lisa Raitt, CEO of the Toronto Port Authority, which operates the airport and stands to save $1 million a year, or $30 million over the life of the agreement, in ferry costs. http://makeashorterlink.com/?J18921736 EXPORT SUBSIDY DECIDING FACTOR Air Canada seen buying Brazilian jet Bombardier's rival Embraer is considered to have an inside track on a pending order By BERTRAND MAROTTE Wednesday, October 15, 2003 - Page B7 MONTREAL -- Bombardier Inc.'s Brazilian rival, Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, has the inside track on a pending order for about 40 jets from Air Canada , an analyst says. "We believe Embraer has all but clinched that order from Air Canada, even though [Air Canada] already operates some 30 Bombardier CRJ200s," Jacques Kavafian of Octagon Capital Corp. said in a research bulletin to clients yesterday. "The Embraer aircraft being of newer technology and with a seating capacity that could stretch from 75 to 108 seats, may be better suited to [Air Canada's] need," he says. Bombardier's CRJ700 and CRJ900 regional jets offer about 70 and 86 seats, respectively. "Furthermore, [Air Canada] has already started shaping the media and public opinion to the shock that it is buying Brazilian jets, not from its Montreal neighbour, by publicly chastising the Canadian government's export loan subsidies. http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20031015/RAIR15//?query=airline* (Note: Bombardier out of the game means that Jazz is out of the game, and will not see a new aircraft in its fleet for years to come. A positive sign would be the replacement of Dashes, but there is no end in sight to cuts at Jazz, should the regional jets be awarded to Zip/Mainline. F-28 replacements should have gone to the regional operation, but oh well, let the mothercorp take all the losses and make all of the mistakes first.) Brazil approves $770m for Embraer Wednesday, October 8, 2003 Posted: 0249 GMT (10:49 AM HKT) RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) -- Brazil's state National Social and Economic Development Bank (BNDES) says it has approved $770 million in financing for customers of local aircraft maker Embraer. The cash is part of a $1 billion financing package the bank has pledged to give the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of civilian planes to help its clients fund purchases. "Yesterday we approved two new operations, one of $700 million and one of $70 million, to finance Embraer importers," BNDES president Carlos Lessa told reporters Tuesday. Embraer stocks shot 9 percent higher to close at 17.15 reais, far outperforming a 1.1 percent gain by Brazil's benchmark Bovespa stock index. http://edition.cnn.com/2003/BUSINESS/10/07/brazil.embraer.reut/ :[ OB

Guest V1V2Vgo
You lost me, both AC and Jazz currently operate CRJ's, thus a new type would be just that, to both carriers?? Regards, V1V2Vgo
Guest pitstacker
I don't know why AC or any other Canadian airline should be pushed/forced into buying a possibly inferior aircraft just because it's Canadian. I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but the airline is trying to survive and prosper, it should choose the best aircraft for the job, no matter where it comes from!
