Canadian Press

Friday, September 12, 2003

MONTREAL -- Air Canada's passenger traffic fell 13.8 per cent in August compared with the same time last year, with its routes to the United States and the Pacific region hardest hit, the airline disclosed Friday.

However, traffic on Air Canada's Atlantic routes was up 1.2 per cent compared with August 2002. And the Jazz regional airline reported a 7.8 per cent year-to-year increase last month.

Show And Stifle, If You Please!

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer said on Tuesday one of its seven EMBRAER 170 test models landed with its undercarriage up last weekend, putting the jet out of action for some weeks.

The company, which is officially called Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica, said the incident on Sunday was most probably caused by human error and would not delay the certification of the jet, which Embraer expects will come in November.

The jet, which is designed to carry 70 people, damaged the engine nacelles and the lower aft fuselage in what Embraer called the "unintentional gear-up landing." The other six

EMBRAER 170 planes remain in the development program, it said.

Embraer last week posted a worse than expected 87 percent drop in second quarter net profit after its earnings were battered by the appreciation of Brazil's currency and depressed demand for aircraft.

Two Islamic leaders from Toronto were denied entry into the United States on Friday after being detained for 16 hours at an airport by federal agents who told they picked the wrong day - Sept. 11 - to fly, an Islamic civil rights group said.

Ahmed Kutty, 59, and Sheik Abdul Hamid, 37, were detained Friday afternoon at the Broward County Jail, said Altaf Ali, executive director of the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

They were denied entry into the United States and were booked for an afternoon flight back to Toronto, Ali said. They arrived late Friday.
