Computer failure hits BA flights

06/09/2003 - 14:09:49

Hundreds of British Airways customers have had their flights cancelled or delayed after a world-wide computer failure.

Screens went blank at BA check-in desks across the globe as the company's computerised passenger and baggage handling system failed.

BA said a problem within the hub of their system, based near Heathrow, had led to a power outage for around two hours.

Engineers are now working on the problem, but what caused the trouble is still not known.

The worst affected airport was Heathrow. It led to 11 flights being cancelled, all to European destinations.

BA said they were trying to put the passengers on later flights.

No other cancellations were reported but there were delays at other airports.

Further BA flights are experiencing a two-hour delay on average but no further cancellations were expected.

A BA spokeswoman said a temporary power outage led to the problem but in most cases the system came back up very quickly except at Heathrow.

"The system is now up and running," she added.

"We have got a team of IT experts investigating the cause of the problem. At this stage we do not know what happened."
