Nav Canada raises fees

Globe and Mail Update

From the GAM today....

Nav Canada said it is going ahead with a fee increases that average 6.9 per cent to help deal with a revenue shortfall for the downturn in travel since Sept. 11.

The not-for-profit company that runs Canada's air traffic control system first announced it was looking at the increase in May, and waited the 60-day consultation period.

It said it had cut $75-million from operation costs over the past two years, but said that with the increase, its rates will be, on average, 4 per cent higher than rates in March, 1999.

"On a per-passenger basis, the increase amounts to 65 cents more per one- way ticket for a flight from Toronto to Ottawa," Nav Canada said. Other examples are laid out in its Web site.

"Through the current industry downturn, Nav Canada has done everything possible to reduce costs while maintaining the highest safety standards," John Crichton, Nav Canada CEO said.

Nav Canada says it reported a $14-million loss in the quarter ended in May, partly as a result of bad debts related to Air Canada's unpaid charges. It said Air Canada owes it $45-million up to its filing for creditor protection.

The company is now forecasting a fiscal 2003 loss of $121-million, a bigger loss than the $84-million.
