Transport Minister Announces Designation of Air Canada

to Serve Cuba

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Transport Minister David Collenette today

announced the designation of Air Canada to operate scheduled

international air services between Canada and Cuba.

The Air Transport Agreement between the Government of Canada and

the Government of the Republic of Cuba provides for the

designation of two air carriers for each country. Cubana, which

is the only designated Cuban air carrier, serves Montreal and

Toronto. Air Canada is the second airline designated to fly to

Cuba; Air Transat currently holds Canada's other designation to

provide scheduled air services to the country.

Air Canada will operate flights from Calgary, Halifax, London,

Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. Destinations in Cuba will

include Havana, Varadero, Holguin and one other city to be chosen

by Canada under the Air Transport Agreement.

Under the provisions of Canada's international air transportation

policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for

designation to operate scheduled international air services.
