McRae Posted July 11, 2003 Share Posted July 11, 2003 FOR: TRANSPORT CANADA JULY 11, 2003 - 09:20 ET Transport Minister Announces Designation of Air Canada to Serve Cuba OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the designation of Air Canada to operate scheduled international air services between Canada and Cuba. The Air Transport Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Cuba provides for the designation of two air carriers for each country. Cubana, which is the only designated Cuban air carrier, serves Montreal and Toronto. Air Canada is the second airline designated to fly to Cuba; Air Transat currently holds Canada's other designation to provide scheduled air services to the country. Air Canada will operate flights from Calgary, Halifax, London, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. Destinations in Cuba will include Havana, Varadero, Holguin and one other city to be chosen by Canada under the Air Transport Agreement. Under the provisions of Canada's international air transportation policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for designation to operate scheduled international air services.
