Plane missing near Toronto Island airport

Last Updated Mon, 07 Jul 2003 11:16:59

TORONTO - A small six-seater plane is missing near the Toronto City Centre Airport.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with the twin-engine private jet around 10 a.m. Monday. The plane, believed to be coming in for a landing, was about five kilometres from the airport.

Search crews are patrolling the water around the airport and Toronto police's marine unit have asked any watercraft in the area to help in the search.

CFB Trenton has dispatched three boats and a Hercules aircraft to assist. The Hercules has a radar system capable of picking up a distress signal.

Airport manager Bill Yule said rain and fog created "marginal" weather with visibility of less than half a kilometre.

The control centre was talking to the pilot, said Yule, when "all of a sudden everything went quiet."

The plane is believed to be from the United States.

The airport is located on an island in Lake Ontario close to the city's downtown core.
