The cost of not merging:

Let’s say for argument that we can’t come to some sort of agreement with respect to merging and instead of giving whipsawing it’s finest hour, let’s give it it’s finest decade!

At the moment things are in an almost neutral position: layoffs at both the regional and mainline.

The corporation has made it abundantly clear that they need to compete in the world marketplace by putting as many aircraft at the regionals as they can. Result: Growth at the regional carrier and stagnation and/or decline at the mainline. Where there may have been some incentive for a regional pilot to move over the mainline now, it is not much. Anyone going over now will probably be a career F/O unless his/her age is VERY young. In the process of bidding for these new jobs, the bar gets lowered. It doesn’t take much of a mind to see that mainline wages will be consistently lowered while the regional wages either remain the same or grow slightly.

The mainline will not be much of a career choice for perhaps the next decade. Don’t be surprised if DOH is removed from the table and BOTL is offered.

Hi FL410...yes as things are now,the big winner is the company, they sure have it made when it comes to new equipment and working conditions. Both pilot's had better hang onto that High Visibility Vest,as we don't want to hear of a Captain driving a baggage cart over a F/O servicing the Lav.That's where we are all headed, just wait and see!! Good luck to all...ED
