Pending Layoffs

March 21, 2003 - As mentioned in this space yesterday, we have spoken to Air Canada management and have some further details regarding the pending layoffs.

We have been informed that 600 members of our bargaining unit will be laid off. Notices will be sent out between today and March 31, 2003.

We do not believe that the company has justified the need for 600 flight attendant layoffs at this time. It is also our position that these layoffs constitute a violation of the collective agreement, in that the conditions precedent for a force majeure have not been met.

We have proposed immediate expedited arbitration to resolve this matter, and we expect a response from the company as soon as possible. We continue to seek legal advice about additional avenues to combat these illegal layoffs.

We will advise you in this space as more information becomes available.
