If no deal is reached by midnight Saturday, both could be forced into a court-ordered settlement or Air Canada could be forced into bankruptcy. That would mean the airline's assets would be sold off and shareholders would be out of luck.

Judge James Farley, who has been overseeing the insolvent airline's restructuring, blasted negotiators on both sides as he ordered them back into talks.

"There is no time to leisurely reach a resolution. Otherwise we'll have an academic debate over the bones, after the buzzards pilfer the airline apart," he said. "With this much at stake, I trust there will be no playing games."
