NATS Purchasing Nav Canada’s Automated ATC System For North Atlantic

National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which provides air traffic control throughout the U.K., and parts of the North Atlantic, confirms that it is purchasing Nav Canada’s Gander Automated Air Traffic System (GAATS), which will be developed by the companies for use at the NATS Oceanic Area Control Centre at Prestwick, Scotland.

The new system will be known as the Shanwick Automated Air Traffic System (SAATS) and is expected to be operational within three years. It will replace the U.K.’s current Oceanic Flight Data Processing System. The two companies say the deal is the product of a the four-month old collaboration between NATS and Nav Canada to improve capacity over the North Atlantic.

According to Nav Canada and NATS, SAATS will offer several new features including map-based route planning, displaying multiple options where available, direct datalink communications between controllers and pilots, and the ability to reassign airspace between control positions to optimize staffing and traffic flow requirements.
