The man who attempted to hijack a Canjet plane from the tarmac of a Jamaican airport last April faces up to 20 years in prison.

The Jamaica Gleaner is reporting Stephen Fray has been given a total of 83 years in prison, but he will only spend up to 20 years behind bars, as the sentences will run concurrently.

Fray had previously been found guilty of multiple charges including assault and robbery.

The attempted hijacking took place on April 19 when Fray managed to dodge airport security in Montego Bay and board a Canjet flight.

Fray threatened passengers and crew with a gun and demanded to be flown off the island, only letting passengers off the aircraft when they agreed to give him money.

A Canadian-trained Jamaican counter-terrorism squad managed to capture Fray after a six-hour standoff, and the crew was eventually released unharmed.

Reports say his lawyers plan to appeal the sentence
